Xbox One cloud game saves FAQ

Cloud saves let you play games on multiple consoles. If you have more than one Xbox One console, or if you want to play games at a friend's house, you can store your saved games in the cloud (on our Xbox Live servers). This way you can continue playing a game on a different console, right from where you left off.

This page answers frequently asked questions about how to use Xbox One game saves stored in the cloud.

How do I sync my saved games to the cloud?

Your saved games are automatically stored in the cloud while you're connected to Xbox Live. You don't have to select cloud storage. If you sign in to a different Xbox One console, your saves will be recovered and accessible from that console as soon as you sign in with your Xbox profile.

Do I need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to use cloud storage?

No. Anyone who is signed up for the Xbox Live service can synchronize their saved games to the cloud.

What's stored on my hard drive, and what's stored in the cloud?

Your data is stored to both your hard drive and the cloud simultaneously. Xbox Live keeps your important data in sync so you don't lose anything when you use a friend or family member's console, or even when you switch to a new console.

Note A regular connection to Xbox Live is required to keep your data in sync. Playing offline may cause your cloud data to become out of date. Your data refreshes each time you connect to Xbox Live.

Can I use my cloud saves offline?

You must be connected to Xbox Live when you start a game in order to access Cloud Saved Games. If you get disconnected from Xbox Live while playing a game, you can continue playing. If you're not connected to Xbox Live when you exit the game, your game save will not be uploaded to the cloud. You'll need to connect to Xbox Live before you can use the game save on another console (when you connect to Xbox Live, your game save will be uploaded to the cloud).

How do I know my game saves are in the cloud?

While you're playing a game, the game data is stored on your Xbox One console. When you exit the game, your data is stored to both your hard drive and the cloud simultaneously.

Can I store my downloaded content, add-ons, or arcade games in the cloud?

No. Downloadable content must be stored locally to allow for fast loading.

If you need to reinstall a game, uninstall it first, and then reinstall it. Here's how:

  1. On Home, select My games and apps.
  2. Select Games.
  3. Highlight the game you want to uninstall, press the Menu button , and then select Manage game.
  4. Select Manage all, select Uninstall all, and then select Uninstall.

You can then reinstall the game by inserting the disc or downloading again from the Store. To download the game again, search for the game in the Store, select the game, and then select Install.

Can I store my profile in the cloud?

Xbox profiles are automatically stored in the cloud. For information about how to download or redownload your profile, visit How to add or remove a Microsoft account on Xbox One.

How much cloud storage do I have?

On Xbox One, each individual game is given storage. As a user's game library grows, so does their cloud storage, and an Xbox Live Gold subscription is not required. This effectively gives Xbox One users unlimited cloud storage based on their library size.

Can I copy all of my saves to the cloud?

If you're an avid gamer, you might run out of cloud storage space. If this happens, you should free up space by deleting game saves you no longer need. Or, you can keep on gaming without saving to the cloud.

How do I delete saves I no longer need?

You can manage your data for individual games through My games & apps on your Home screen. Here's how:

  1. On Home, select My games and apps.
  2. Highlight the game, press the Menu button on your controller, and then select Manage game.
  3. Scroll to the right, highlight the saved data for your gamertag under Saved Data, and then press A on your controller.
  4. You'll be prompted to confirm deletion of this game save data:
    • Delete from console will remove the local copy of this save. You can retrieve it from the cloud the next time you play.
    • Delete everywhere will remove your saved data from this console, the cloud, and all other consoles you play on.
    • Cancel will leave your data intact.

How do I access my Xbox 360 cloud saves on my Xbox One console?

To access your Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One console, you must turn on Cloud Saved Games on your Xbox 360 console. To do this and to get troubleshooting help, see Store your saved games in the cloud.
