How do I get Microsoft Minesweeper? How much does it cost?

Microsoft Minesweeper is available for free in the Windows Store on your Windows 8.1 device.

I’m having problems purchasing items from the Windows Store.

Go to the Windows Store support page for help with transactions and purchases. You can also visit Windows support for information about troubleshooting download and installation issues.

Microsoft Minesweeper is telling me I need to switch to a Microsoft account, add a Microsoft account or access and update my Xbox Live info. Why?

This is so your Microsoft Minesweeper game can save all your games and in-game progress to your Microsoft account. It also saves your achievements and player game data to the cloud.

In addition, your Microsoft account is also your Xbox Live account, so you don’t need to create a new Xbox Live account. See Manage your Microsoft account for more information.

I tried to play Microsoft Minesweeper, but there was a problem with it. Help!

This can occur when you haven’t downloaded important or optional updates to Windows. This can affect connectivity to Xbox Live or even prevent Microsoft Minesweeper from starting. Follow these steps to make sure that you’ve installed all available updates for Windows 8.1:

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for Updates.
  4. In the Windows Update screen, click the Check Now button.
  5. Click View Details.
  6. Install all updates that you see, including optional updates.
  7. Restart your computer.

If these steps don’t solve the issue, you’ll have to uninstall Microsoft Minesweeper, clear the Windows Store cache, and then reinstall the game. Here's how:

  1. Uninstall Microsoft Minesweeper by right-clicking the app icon and choosing Uninstall from the menu.
  2. Press the Windows key + R, or swipe from the bottom-left corner to open the Run window.
  3. Type wsreset /n in the Run window, and then click OK.
  4. The Windows Store opens and displays the following message:

Why can't I sign in to Xbox Live when I launch the game?

This occurs when your device can’t connect to the website. Follow these steps:

  1. In a browser, try to sign in to your Microsoft account on
  2. If you can't access the website on your Windows 8.1 device, there may be a problem with your Internet connection. Try connecting to a different website.
  3. If you can access other websites but not the website, one of the following is causing the problem:
    • The website is down. In this situation, you’ll have to wait until the site has returned to service.
    • Xbox in-game logins may be down. Visit the Xbox Live Status page to see if in-game logins are working.
    • Your Windows Firewall is blocking your computer from accessing the site. By default, some apps are blocked by Windows Firewall to help make your PC more secure. To work properly, you might need to allow an app to receive info through the firewall. For more info, see the “Allow an app to receive info through the firewall” section of Windows Firewall from start to finish.
    • Your router is blocking a port used by the game. In this case, you need to contact your Internet service provider for assistance in opening that port.
  4. If you can access the website but are unable to sign in, contact Xbox Support.
  5. If you’re able to sign in and a pop-up appears asking you to accept the Xbox Services Terms and Conditions, make sure that you read and then accept them. You can choose not to accept them, but doing so will prevent you from using the Xbox service.
  6. If everything is working fine on, there's something preventing your game from talking to Xbox. Go to the “I tried to play Microsoft Minesweeper, but there was a problem with it. Help!” section and follow the steps listed there.
