Create and customize playlists using Smart DJ

In this article

Smart DJ automatically creates a playlist for you based on any album, artist, or song of your choice. The playlists are created from music in your collection. You can also create Smart DJ playlists and sync them to your Zune player or Windows Phone.

Launch a Smart DJ mix

From your Collection

  1. Open the Zune Music + Video software and click Collection at the top of the screen.
  2. Find a song, album, or artist, right-click the title, and then select Play Smart DJ mix. Or, click the Smart DJ icon that appears when you point to an album.

Note The Smart DJ icon is the right-pointing arrow at the far left of the album cover. If you put your pointer over the icon, you’ll see “Play Smart DJ mix.”

From Quickplay

  1. Open the Zune Music + Video software and click Quickplay in the upper-left part of the screen.
  2. Click any tile labeled Smart DJ in the bottom part of the screen, under your other pinned items.
  3. If you haven't done so already, click Add an artist or this icon:
  1. Enter the name of any artist in your collection to set up a Smart DJ playlist, and then click the check mark icon to accept your selection.
  2. To listen to your Smart DJ playlist, click the tile you just created, and then click the Play Smart DJ mix icon, which is the right-pointing arrow.

Create Smart DJ playlists

Create a Smart DJ playlist from your collection

  1. Right-click any song, artist, or album in your collection, and then click Create Smart DJ playlist.

Note If you get No results found, try again. This can mean the selected song doesn’t have enough metadata (information) to create a match.

  2. Name your playlist.
  3. If you want Smart DJ to update the playlist with new selections, select Automatically refresh this playlist periodically check box.
  4. Click OK to save your playlist.

To save the Smart DJ mix that you're listening to

  1. If you’re not already on the Now Playing screen, click the Now Playing icon in the lower-right corner of any Zune software screen.
  1. At the bottom of the Now Playing list, click Save as Playlist
  2. Name your playlist and click OK. You’ll find your new Smart DJ playlist in your collection’s Playlist column under “Smart DJ.”

Find your Smart DJ playlists in the Zune software

In the Zune software, click Collection at the top of the screen. Click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen. Your playlists are in the left column. Look for playlists under “Smart DJ.”

Sync a Smart DJ playlist with a device

  1. Open the Zune software and click Collection at the top of the screen,
  2. Click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen.
  3. Find your Smart DJ playlist in the left column and drag it to the Device icon in the lower-left corner of the screen.

Use Smart DJ on your Zune HD

  1. In your music collection, find a song, artist, or album.
  2. Press and hold the item and select Play Smart DJ Mix. Or, tap the Smart DJ icon (the right-pointing arrow) on an artist page.

Customize Smart DJ playlists

Use these settings to customize your Smart DJ playlist:

  • Automatic refresh: This setting automatically generates a new set of songs. If your playlist has an Items I choose sync relationship with your Zune device, the Smart DJ playlist will automatically be updated on your Zune device the next time you sync it to your collection.
  • Playlist duration: This sets your playlist to play for a certain amount of time or to include a specific number of songs. Your playlist can have up to 100 songs or be up to 500 minutes long.

To change settings for Automatic refresh or Playlist duration

  1. In the Zune Music + Video software, click Collection at the top of your screen.
  2. Click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen.
  3. Select a Smart DJ playlist, and then click Edit playlist or Refresh in the lower-right corner of the screen.
  1. If you’re editing your playlist, enter the new settings and click OK.

If you refreshed your playlist, Zune will automatically refresh the songs in that list.
