How to change your Xbox Live gamertag

Overview

You can easily change your Xbox Live gamertag. If your gamertag was created for you during your initial Xbox Live signup (meaning you did not choose it yourself), you can change it one time for free. Additional Xbox Live gamertag changes cost extra.

If you chose your own gamertag at sign-up and want to change it later, your Xbox Live account will be charged (fee varies by region and currency).

Solutions

Change your gamertag through a web browser

Here's how:

  1. Go to Change gamertag at account.xbox.com.
  2. Sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
  3. Enter your new gamertag and then select Check Availability.

  1. Once you find an available gamertag, click Claim it!
    Note You can change your gamertag once for free. Additional Xbox Live gamertag changes cost extra.

Change your gamertag on Xbox One

Note Xbox One may not be available in all locales.

  1. Scroll left from Home to open the guide.
  2. Scroll to the top of the guide and select View profile.
  3. Select Customise profile.
  4. Select your gamertag.
  5. Select a suggested available gamertag or select Make my own to create your own.
  6. When you're finished, select Claim it, then select Sounds good.
  7. Once you see your gamertag, select Close.

After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox Live, and if there is an additional cost, the payment option associated with your Xbox Live account is charged. You don't need to tell your friends that you've changed your gamertag—their Friends lists will be updated automatically.

Change your gamertag on Xbox 360

Here's how:

  1. On your Xbox 360 console, go to social, and then select Sign In or Out.

  1. Select your profile to sign in.

  1. Scroll right to settings and select Profile.

  1. Select Gamertag.

  1. Select Enter New Gamertag.
The Change Gamertag screen includes options for "Get Suggestions" and "Enter New Gamertag", which is highlighted.
  1. Type a new gamertag (up to 15 characters), and then select Done.
An on-screen keyboard is displayed for you to enter your new gamertag along with a "Done" button.

If the gamertag you entered is already taken, you'll be prompted to try another gamertag.

  1. After you enter or select a new gamertag, select Yes, use this gamertag.
A screen says "Gamertag Available" and gives you two options – "No, edit it" and "Use this gamertag", which is highlighted.

After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox Live, and if there is an additional cost, the payment option associated with your Xbox Live account is charged. You don't need to tell your friends that you've changed your gamertag—their Friends lists will be updated automatically.

Change your gamertag in the Xbox app on Windows 10

You can change your gamertag once for free. Additional changes cost extra.

If you haven't changed your gamertag before, you can change it in the Xbox app on Windows 10. If you have changed it before, go to account.xbox.com to change your gamertag. Your account will be charged. See Change your gamertag through a web browser.

  1. Go to the Xbox app in Windows 10 and sign in using the Microsoft account email address and password associated with your gamertag.
  2. In the upper-left corner of the app's home screen, select your gamerpic.

After you confirm your new gamertag, the change is reflected across Xbox. You don't need to tell your friends that you've changed your gamertag—their Friends lists will be updated automatically.
