Change the guest key on your Xbox One console

Overview

To change the guest key on your Xbox One console, you’ll first need to remove the existing guest key. Any content restrictions that you put in place using your existing guest key will be erased, so you’ll need to set them again when you create the new key.

Note If you forgot your existing guest key, follow the steps at You forgot the guest key on your Xbox One console.

Step 1: Remove the existing guest key

First, remove the existing guest key. Here's how:

  1. Scroll left from Home to open the Guide.
  2. Select Sign in.
  3. Scroll down to select the account that you want to sign in to.
    Note You must be signed in as an adult on the account.

  1. After you've signed in to your account, scroll left from Home to open the guide.

  1. Select Settings.

  1. Select System.
  2. Select Signed-out content restrictions.

  1. Enter your password to confirm your identity.

  1. Select Remove guest key.

  1. Enter the existing guest key to remove it.

Note If you've forgotten the guest key, enter an incorrect guest key three times and the console will ask you for your password. Enter your password to remove the guest key.

Step 2: Create a new guest key

Create a new guest key to replace the one that you removed. Here's how:

  1. Scroll left from Home to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.
  4. Select Signed out content restrictions.
  5. Select Create a guest key.

  1. Use your controller to create a 6-digit passkey. Make sure that you use something you'll remember but that can’t be guessed by others.

Step 3: Grant access to content and apps for the guest key

After you create your guest key, the Signed-out content restrictions screen appears. Now, add any content or app restrictions for the guest key that you created. Here's how:

  1. Select Access to content & apps.

  1. Scroll down to select the age-appropriate content level you want to allow your guests to use. Age-appropriate ratings are determined by your location. A description of what is available at each age level is shown on the right of the screen. Press B on your controller when finished.

  1. For any setting other than “Unrestricted”, select Hide listings in search, stores & apps to hide all app or content listings that are not age appropriate. Press B on your controller when finished.

  1. Explicit TV is blocked by default. If you want to change this setting, select Unblock explicit TV, and then press B on your controller when finished.

  1. By default, your console allows new accounts to be downloaded or created when no one is signed in to the console. To block this feature, make sure that the Let people download & make new accounts option is not selected.
