Error C000009D occurs when your Kinect sensor doesn’t turn on

Problem

You see one of the following messages and error codes when your Kinect sensor doesn’t turn on:

  • Sensor disconnected
    Error code: C000009D
  • This game requires a Kinect sensor
    Error code: C000009D
  • The Kinect sensor isn't connected
    Error code: C000009D

This may mean that the Kinect sensor is not connected correctly, or a necessary update has not been installed.

Solutions

Solution 1: Update your console software

  1. Insert a Kinect game disc.
  2. Start the game from the Xbox Dashboard.
  3. If your Xbox console software needs updating, you’ll see the following message:

    Update Required: An update has been found. To apply this update, you must restart your console.

  4. Select Yes, Restart to install the update.

Solution 2: Check the cables

Xbox 360 S console

  1. Turn off the console.

    Important Remove the Power/USB adaptor cable if your Kinect sensor came with one.

  2. Plug the sensor cable into the AUX port on the back of the console.
  3. Turn on the console.

Original Xbox 360 console

  1. Turn off the console.
  2. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working power point.
  3. Make sure that the USB connector is plugged into the back of the console.

The light located near the middle of the cable should be green.

No green light? Try plugging the cable into another socket to make sure that the cable is working. If you need to replace the cable, contact Xbox Support.

  1. Turn on the console.

If you've tried the steps above but are still having a problem, try this:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to Settings and then select System Settings.
  3. Select Kinect Settings.
  4. Select Kinect Sensor, and then select On.

If these steps don't resolve the problem, go to the Online Service Centre and click Start Request to request a repair.
