Cross play on Windows 10 and Xbox One

Cross play allows you to cross-save between supported platforms and devices. This means that you can start a game you own on Xbox One and then continue playing on Windows 10, and vice versa. Not all games currently support this functionality. To check if your game does, read the game details in the Xbox One Games store or the Windows 10 store.

How it works

If you own both the Windows 10 and the Xbox One version of the same game that supports cross play, the following will allow you to continue playing on either platform:

  • You must be signed in with the same Microsoft account on both platforms.
    • On Windows 10, this is the account that you use to launch the Xbox app and play the game.
    • On Xbox One, this is the account that you sign in to on your console.
  • You must be online when you save your game.
    • If you’re not online, the next time that you start the game and you’re online, your progress will be saved to the cloud.

When your game is saved to the cloud, there may be a delay while your new save is synced with your existing save. This is to ensure that you don’t lose any progress or achievements. It can take up to 10 minutes.

If you change platforms and your progress isn’t up to date:

  1. Check your network settings and make sure that you’re fully connected.
  2. Wait a little longer – if your game has saved successfully, it may still be syncing with your existing game save. If you get a warning that your other device is taking a while to upload data to the cloud, this means that syncing is still taking place.
  3. Close the game and re-open it. This will trigger an automatic cloud save of your game. Once you’ve done this, wait for the game saves to sync before you play again.

Some games will display a warning message when you first save on Windows 10 that prompts you to first save on your Xbox One. If you don’t want to do this, you can ignore the message and create a new game save. However, any previous game save for your gamertag on Xbox One will be erased.
