Microsoft Solitaire Collection for Windows 8 is telling me I need to switch to a Microsoft account, add a Microsoft account or access and update my Xbox Live info. Why?

This is so your Microsoft Solitaire Collection app for Windows 8 can save all your games and in-game progress to your Microsoft account. It also saves your achievements and player game data to the cloud.

Your Microsoft account is also your Xbox Live account, so you don't need to create a new Xbox Live account. See Manage your Microsoft account FAQ for more information.

In addition, by signing in with your Xbox Live account, you can earn achievements, compete with your friends, submit your scores to the leaderboards and track your personal gameplay statistics. Because your information is stored to the cloud by the app's new Play, Pause, Resume feature, you can pause your game and resume it where you left off on any compatible device.

Why can't I sign in to Xbox Live when I launch the game?

This occurs when your device can't connect to the Xbox.com website. Follow these steps:

  1. In a browser, try to sign in to your Microsoft account on http://www.xbox.com.
  2. If you can't access the xbox.com website on your Windows 8.1 device, there may be a problem with your Internet connection. Try connecting to a different website.
  3. If you can access other websites but not the Xbox.com website, one of the following is causing the problem:
    • The Xbox.com website is down. In this situation, you'll have to wait until the site has returned to service.
    • Xbox in-game logins may be down. Visit Xbox Live Status to see if in-game logins are working.
    • Your Windows Firewall is blocking your computer from accessing the site. By default, the Windows Firewall blocks some apps to help make your PC more secure. To work properly, you might need to allow an app to receive info through the firewall. For more info, see the "Allow an app to receive info through the firewall" section of Windows Firewall from start to finish.
    • Your router is blocking a port used by the game. In this case, you need to contact your Internet service provider for assistance in opening that port.
  4. If you can access the website but are unable to sign in, contact Xbox Support.
  5. If you're able to sign in and a pop-up appears asking you to accept the Xbox Services Terms and Conditions, make sure that you read and then accept them. You can choose not to accept them, but doing so will prevent you from using the Xbox service.
  6. If everything is working fine on Xbox.com, there's something preventing your game from talking to Xbox. See I tried to play Microsoft Solitaire Collection for Windows 8, but there was a problem with it. Help! and follow the steps listed there.
