Microsoft Sudoku is available for free in the Windows Store on your Windows 8.1 device.

Go to the Windows Store support page for help with transactions and purchases. You can also visit Windows support for information about troubleshooting download and installation issues.

Microsoft Sudoku is telling me I need to switch to a Microsoft account, add a Microsoft account or access and update my Xbox Live info. Why?

This is so your Microsoft Sudoku app can save all your saved games and in-game progress to your Microsoft account. It also saves your achievements and player game data to the cloud.

Your Microsoft account is your Xbox Live account, so you don’t need to create a new Xbox Live account. See Manage your Microsoft account FAQ for more information.

This can occur when you haven’t downloaded important or optional updates to Windows. This can affect connectivity to Xbox Live or even prevent Microsoft Sudoku from starting. Follow these steps to make sure that you’ve installed all available updates for Windows 8.1:

  1. Press the Windows key.
  2. Type Windows Update.
  3. Click Check for Updates.
  4. In the Windows Update screen, click the Check Now button.
  5. Click View Details.
  6. Install all updates that you see, including optional updates.
  7. Restart your computer.

If these steps didn’t resolve the issue, you’ll have to uninstall Microsoft Sudoku, clear the Windows Store cache and then reinstall the game. Here's how:

  1. Click Start and then click the arrow at the bottom of the Start screen to see a list of all your applications.
  2. Locate the Microsoft Sudoku app icon, right-click the icon and then click Uninstall.
  3. Press the Windows key + R, or swipe from the bottom-left corner to open the Run window.
  4. Type wsreset /n in the Run window, and then click OK.
  5. The Windows Store opens and displays the following message:
The cache for the store was cleared. You can now browse the store for apps.
  6. Hover over the right-hand side to bring up the charm bar and click Settings.
  7. In the Settings menu, select App Updates.

Why can't I sign in to Xbox Live when I launch the game?

This occurs when your device can’t connect to the website. Follow these steps:

  1. In a browser, sign in to your Microsoft account on
  2. If you can't access the website on your Windows 8.1 device, there may be a problem with your Internet connection. Try connecting to a different website.
  3. If you can access other websites but not the website, one of the following is causing the problem:
    • The website is down. In this situation, you’ll have to wait until the site has returned to service.
    • Xbox in-game logins may be down. Visit the Xbox Live Status page to see if in-game logins are working.
    • Your Windows Firewall is blocking your computer from accessing the site. By default, the Windows Firewall blocks some apps to help make your PC more secure. To work properly, you might need to allow an app to receive info through the firewall. For more info, see the "Allow an app to receive info through the firewall" section of Windows Firewall from start to finish.
    • Your router is blocking a port used by the game. In this case, you need to contact your Internet service provider for assistance in opening that port.
  4. If you can access the website but are unable to sign in, contact Xbox Support.
  5. If you’re able to sign in and are asked to accept the Terms of Service, be sure to read and then accept them. You can choose not to accept them, but this will prevent you from using the Xbox service.
  6. If everything is working fine on, there's something preventing your game from talking to Xbox. Go to the "I tried to play Microsoft Sudoku but there was a problem with it. Help!" section above and follow the steps listed there.

If you're still not able to sign in to, visit the MS Casual Games Troubleshooting Teams page on Facebook, or contact us with a direct message on the Microsoft Sudoku Facebook page.
