New accounts

When you set up an Xbox One or Xbox 360 console and create a new Microsoft account, you’ll be able to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold monthly renewing membership and receive your first month free.

You can also sign up for an Xbox Live Gold trial membership when you create your new account online. Here's how:

  1. After you create a Microsoft account, sign in to the Subscriptions page.
  2. Select Gold – 1 Month FREE Trial, and then click Next.
  3. Click Add a credit card.
Important Although your Xbox Live Gold one-month trial membership is free, we need a payment option on file because the membership will renew to an Xbox Live Gold subscription unless you cancel it. You must add a payment method such as a credit card or PayPal to your account. If you don’t want to keep your membership going after your free trial, you must cancel automatic renewal to cancel your membership. See “How to cancel an Xbox Live Gold trial membership” below.
  1. Enter your billing information, and then click Next.
  2. Follow the prompts to complete the sign-up process.

Notes

  • The Xbox Live Gold trial membership is associated with a single gamertag.
  • Only three trial accounts are available per console. After a user has created three trial accounts on their console, they no longer receive a message that provides the opportunity to create an Xbox Live Gold trial account.
  • Make sure that your country/region is correct in your billing information when you sign up for this offer.

Important At the end of the free trial period, membership automatically turns into a paid subscription that renews monthly by default. The paid subscription will renew to the payment method you added to your account. If you don’t want the free membership to renew, you must cancel automatic renewal. See “How to cancel an Xbox Live Gold trial membership” below.

Xbox Live Gold one-month free trial memberships

If you already have an Xbox Live account and don’t have an active Xbox Live Gold paid subscription, you may be able to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold one-month free trial membership.

Notes

  • This is a free one-month trial membership that converts to a subscription and renews monthly after the first (free) month.
  • This free trial membership is available only for customers who don’t currently have an active paid subscription and have not previously had a trial membership.
  • To sign up for this free trial membership, you must add a payment method to your account such as a credit card or PayPal.

To see if you are eligible for a one-month free trial:

  1. Sign in to the Subscriptions page.
  2. If you’re eligible for a free trial, you’ll see Gold – 1 Month FREE Trial as a subscription offering. Select Gold – 1 Month FREE Trial, and then click Next.
  3. If prompted, add a payment option to your account. If you already have a payment option on file, you can use that.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete the sign-up process.

Important At the end of the first (free) month, membership automatically turns into a paid subscription that renews monthly by default. The paid subscription will renew to the payment method you added to your account. If you don’t want the free membership to renew, you must cancel automatic renewal. See “How to cancel an Xbox Live Gold trial membership” below.

Pre-paid codes for Xbox Live Gold trial memberships

Some games or console bundles may include a prepaid code or token for an Xbox Live Gold trial membership. The Xbox Live Gold trial membership starts as soon as you activate the pre-paid card or token.

The following limitations and restrictions apply to Xbox Live trial tokens:

  • If you have an existing Xbox Live Gold paid subscription, you can’t redeem a prepaid code or token to extend the subscription period. However, you can redeem the prepaid code or token once your current subscription expires.
  • Prepaid codes or tokens are only available in certain games and bundles.
  • You can’t access Games with Gold with this type of membership.
  • You can’t stack prepaid codes or tokens. This means that you can’t start another trial period before your current trial period has finished. However, you can purchase a new Xbox Live Gold subscription and start the membership at any time during the trial period.
  • If you don’t currently have a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription, you can use an unlimited number of prepaid codes or tokens to receive separate Xbox Live Gold trial memberships. Because you cannot stack prepaid codes or tokens, you must wait until your current trial period has finished before you start another trial period.
