How to set up and use Kinect sign-in

Kinect has the ability to recognise you and sign you in to your Xbox One console. When you download your profile to your console, or during your initial console set-up, you will be given the option to sign in using Kinect.

Set up automatic sign-in with Kinect during initial set-up

After you create or download your profile, you'll prompted to either Sign me in with Kinect or Sign in manually. To allow Kinect to sign you in automatically, select Sign me in with Kinect.

A Kinect screen offers options for 'Sign in manually' and 'Sign me in with Kinect', which is highlighted.

Next, the Kinect sensor will record your biometrics, such as your facial features and body shape, so that it can distinguish you from other people in your play space and sign you in. If there are others in the sensor's view during this step, make sure that you identify yourself by raising your hand when prompted.

A Kinect screen shows a picture of the player with a gamertag and prompts the player to confirm that Kinect is seeing the correct player.

Set up automatic sign-in with Kinect at a later date

If you select Sign in manually, you can always set up automatic sign-in later. Here's how:

  1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.
  4. Select Account.
  5. Select Sign-in, Security & Passkey.
  6. In the first column, select Change my sign-in & security preferences.
  7. Select Make it fast, make it magic.
  8. Select Sign me in with Kinect.
  9. Your Kinect sensor will try to detect you. If your name appears next to your image on the screen, select That's Me. If your name doesn't appear, raise your hand.

Train the Kinect sensor to recognise you better

If your Kinect sensor fails to recognise you, follow these steps to train Kinect to identify you:

  1. Sign in on the console.
  2. Press the Xbox button on the controller to return to Home.
  3. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
  4. Select Sign-in, which is the top option in the guide.
  5. Select Add & manage.
  6. Highlight your gamerpic and select I wasn't recognised.
  7. Make sure that your name appears next to your image on the screen, and then select That's me.

Notes

  • Kinect sign-in data is saved on the console. If you want to use this feature on other consoles, you must set it up on each console.
  • If multiple people are in the sensor's view during sign-in, known users will have their names highlighted next to them. "Guest" will appear next to unknown users.
  • If your appearance changes a lot, you may need to have Kinect sign-in recognise you better. For example, if you grew a beard, lost weight or got new spectacles. (If you wear glasses regularly but change to contact lenses, Kinect may have trouble recognising you.)
  • If the Kinect makes a mistake by selecting the wrong person during sign-in, follow the instructions above to have Kinect recognise you or other people better.
