How to change the power settings on your Xbox One console

It's easy to customize the power settings on your Xbox One console. For example, you can configure your console to shut down automatically or to turn on with a voice command (where available).

To configure your power settings:

  1. Double-tap the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Settings > All Settings > Power & startup.
  3. Select Power mode & startup. You have the following options:
    • Turn off after - Turn off the console automatically when it's not being used. Your options are:
      • 1 hour of inactivity
      • 6 hours of inactivity
      • Don't turn off automatically
    • TV & A/V power options - Select the power-up behavior for devices attached to your console, such as a TV, cable box, or audio receiver.
    • Keep my console, games & apps up to date - Choose to receive system updates automatically while the console is off, and update games and apps in the background.

Note If your console is in energy-saving mode, then the option is Keep my games & apps up to date. Automatic system updates aren't available in energy-saving mode, but you can still choose to update your games and apps in the background while the console is on.

    • Power mode - Choose Instant-on to allow your console to take updates, wake on voice, and do other things while turned off. Choose Energy-saving mode to power down more completely and forgo the instant-on features.
    • When you choose Instant-on, you have these additional options:

    • Wake up Xbox by saying... - Allow your console to start up with your voice (where available).
    • When Xbox is off, turn off storage - Adjust the behavior of your external storage device. If you're having problems with your external storage device, we recommend leaving this option unselected.
    • On start, go to TV - Allow your console to go straight to the OneGuide app to watch TV instead of Home when it turns on.

To shut down or restart your console:

  1. Double-tap the Xbox button open the guide.
  2. Select Settings > All Settings > Power & startup.
  3. Select Turn off or restart. You have the following options:
    • Full shutdown - Power down your console.
    • Restart now - Restart your console immediately.

Note If your console is set to instant-on, Full shutdown will turn off your console completely, so it won't take updates, wake on voice, or start up as quickly after it's turned off. This is only for shutting down in Settings. Turning off your console normally through the guide, controller, voice, and power button will keep it in instant-on mode. (If your console is set to energy-saving mode, Full shutdown does the same thing as turning it off anywhere else.)
