Download and play music using the Zune Music + Video software

Get an Xbox Music Pass

An Xbox Music Pass subscription gives you unlimited access to all the available music in the Zune collection. The Xbox Music Pass lets you stream or download media to play on your computer, Windows Phone or Xbox 360 console.

Sign up for an Xbox Music Pass subscription

  1. Go to your My Account  page on Xbox.com.
  2. If prompted, sign in with your Microsoft account (formerly Windows Live ID), and then click My Account.
  3. In the Xbox Music Pass section, click Sign Up.
  4. On the Select your Xbox Music Pass screen, select a payment level and then click Next at the bottom of the page to complete your transaction.

Download music

If you have an Xbox Music Pass, you can download and listen to music from Xbox Music Store without purchasing it. Here’s how to download music:

  • From the Zune software:
    1. Start the Zune software on your computer and find the song or album you want to download.
    2. Click Download next to the song or album.
    3. To see your download’s progress, click Store and then Downloads. While your music downloads, you can continue searching for and selecting music.
  • From your Windows Phone:
    1. On start, tap Store (formally known as Store), and then tap Music.
    2. Flick left or right to browse through the available genres or tap the search icon (the magnifying glass) and type a song title, album title or artist name.
    3. When you find an item to download, tap and hold it, and then tap Download.

Play music

You can listen to music from your Zune collection on your computer, Windows Phone or Zune device. Here’s how:

  • From the Zune software on your PC:
    1. Start the Zune software, click Collection, and then click Music.
    2. From your Zune collection, find the album, songs or playlist, and then click the song file you want to start listening to.
  • From your Windows Phone:
    • From start, tap Music+Video, tap Music, and then tap the music files you want to play.

Create a playlist

  1. Start the Zune software, click Collection at the top of the screen, click Music, and then click Playlists in the top-right part of the screen.
  2. Go to the Playlists column on the left. Click New playlist at the bottom of that column
  3. Name your playlist and you’ll see the playlist folder added to your Playlists collection in the left column.
  4. Click Artists in the upper-right part of the screen. You can start dragging songs to your playlist folder, which you’ll see in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  1. To go back and access your playlists, repeat step 1.

Use Smart DJ

Smart DJ automatically creates a playlist for you based on any album, artist or song of your choice from your collection. You can also create Smart DJ playlists and sync them to your Windows phone. Here’s how to use Smart DJ.

Create a Smart DJ playlist from your collection

  1. Right-click any song, artist or album in your collection, and then click Create Smart DJ playlist.
  2. Name your playlist.
  3. If you want Smart DJ to update the playlist with new selections, select Automatically refresh this playlist periodically.
  4. Click OK.

Save the Smart DJ mix you're listening to

  1. Right-click any song, artist or album in your collection and select Play Smart DJ mix.
  2. On the Now Playing screen, click Save as playlist.

Create a Smart DJ playlist from an artist at Xbox Music Store

  1. If you have an Xbox Music Pass, sign in to the Zune Music + Video software.
  2. Click Store at the top of the screen, click Music, and then find an artist's page.
  3. Click the Smart DJ icon (the right-pointing arrow).
  4. On the Now Playing screen, click Save as playlist.

To access your Smart DJ playlists, click Collection, Music, and then Playlists.

To sync a saved Smart DJ playlist with your Windows Phone 7

  1. Click Collection at the top of the screen, click Music, and then click Playlists in the upper-right part of the screen.
  2. Find your Smart DJ playlist in the left column and drag it to the device icon in the lower-left.
