Pre-order Xbox One games in the Xbox Store

Overview

You can pre-order select Xbox One games through the Xbox Store. When you pre-order a game, you can install the digital version before the release date. If your console is connected to Xbox Live, your game and any updates will begin downloading automatically as soon as they're available, allowing you to play the game the first day it's available in your region.

Here are a few things that you should know about this automatic download:

  • Your console must be set to Instant-On power mode for the game to start downloading when available, and it must be connected to the Xbox Live service. For more information about power modes, see About energy-saving and Instant-On power modes.

    Note We recommend that you keep your console in Instant-On power mode and connected to Xbox Live so that any additional updates to the game can be downloaded automatically.

  • Once available, the game will appear in your queue and download in the background without any input from you.
  • If you try to launch the game before the release date, you'll see the "loading" screen, but you'll be unable to play.
  • Any additional add-on items, such as downloadable content, will also be installed with the game, but it can only be accessed once the game has been released.

How to pre-order an Xbox One game

Here's how to pre-order an Xbox One game:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll right to Store, and then select Games at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and select Search all games.
  4. Enter the title of the game you want to pre-order, and then select Search.
  5. On the results page, select the version of the game that contains “Pre-Order” in the title.
  6. Select the Pre-Order button to purchase for the price shown. If the price is not available, it means the game isn't available to pre-order yet.
  7. Once you've completed the purchase, the game is added to your My games & apps queue.

    Note You are immediately charged for the game.

Troubleshooting

This section provides troubleshooting steps to help with problems you might experience with the background installation of your game.

Launching the game returns you to the Home screen

This problem occurs if the game has not been updated, which might be for one of the following reasons:

  • You haven't connected to Xbox Live since pre-ordering the game, so you only have a placeholder file representing the game, not the full download.
  • You have automatic updating disabled.

To resolve this problem, connect your console to Xbox Live to trigger the installation process. If you're connected to Xbox Live but the automatic download didn't occur, you can uninstall the placeholder file that represents your game, and then reinstall it.

To uninstall and reinstall:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to go to the Home screen, and then scroll down and select My games & apps.
  2. Under Games, select the tile for the pre-ordered game, and then press the Menu button on your controller.

  1. Select Manage Game.
  2. Check the size of the game listed after “Manage all”. If this is displayed in kilobytes (KB), it's a placeholder file that can be safely removed.
  3. Press the Menu button on your controller again, and then select Uninstall.

Once the uninstall process has completed, you can search for the game in the Store and reinstall it. See the steps in the following section for reinstalling.

Your game doesn't appear in My games & apps

If you don't see your game listed in My games and apps and you've completed the pre-order process, you'll have to search for the game in the Store. If the original purchase completed successfully, you'll be able to download the game and you won't have to pay again.

To search for the game in the Store:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to go to the Home screen.
  2. Scroll right to Store, and then select Games at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down and select Search all games.
  4. Enter the title of the game, and then select Search.
  5. Select the pre-order edition from the list of available games.
  6. Select Install to begin the installation.

If you don't see the Install option, or if you see a price listed for the purchase, don't purchase the game, as this might result in you being charged again.

To verify whether the original purchase was successful:

  1. In a web browser, sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Select Payment & billing, and then select Order history to view your purchase history.

If your original purchase was successful, the transaction will be listed as "Completed." If you see a completed transaction for the game but don't see the option to install it on your console, contact Xbox Support.

You can play the game as soon as it's released in your region, usually shortly after 12:00 a.m. local time on the release date.

Note If you live in a country that has multiple time zones, there may be a delay in some zones.
