Frequently asked questions

Can I use my Xbox 360 games with Xbox One (or vice versa)?

Xbox One backward compatibility is here. You can play a growing number of digital and disc-based Xbox 360 games on Xbox One. Xbox 360 games run within an emulator on Xbox One, which means you'll be able to use most features from both systems while playing games, such as screenshots, broadcasting and Game DVR.

To play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One, first make sure that your game is supported for Xbox One gameplay. Games supported for backwards compatibility will be marked in the Xbox 360 catalogue. For more information, see Play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One.

Note Xbox One games will not work on Xbox 360.

When will I be able to play my other Xbox 360 games?

We will continue to add more Xbox 360 titles. Check back frequently to see if your titles have been added to the list. Or go to Xbox Feedback to suggest your favourites.

How do I play an Xbox 360 game on my Xbox One?

You must own a supported Xbox 360 title. See Play Xbox 360 games on Xbox One for the full list of backward-compatible games. If you have a supported digital version of the game, you can install the game from the "Ready to Install" section of My games & apps. If you have a disc version of the game, simply insert the disc into your Xbox One console, and the game will download from Xbox Live. You will need to keep the disc in the disc drive after the game is installed to play the game.

How do I open the Xbox 360 guide on my Xbox One?

When you play an Xbox 360 game on Xbox One, you can access the Xbox 360 guide by pressing the View and Menu buttons on your Xbox One controller at the same time.

Note Some games use these buttons independently for separate functions. Watch for unexpected actions if you press one button before the other.

How do I open items that show up as Xbox 360 notifications?

When an Xbox 360 notification appears, press and hold the View and Menu buttons to act on it.

Can I do multiplayer gaming with friends who are playing the game on Xbox 360 or Xbox One?

Yes. For games that offer multiplayer gaming, you'll be able to play with others who own the title on Xbox 360.

How do I pick up at the same place in a game on Xbox One where I left off on Xbox 360?

To continue playing a game on Xbox One that you started on Xbox 360, save it to the cloud. If you're already using cloud saves, you're ready to go. If your saved game is stored only on your Xbox 360, do the following.

Note You must have an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

  1. On Xbox 360, go to Settings and then select System.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Highlight Cloud Saved Games, press Y on the controller and then select Enable.

Start your game. When you're prompted to select a device for saving your game, choose Cloud Saved Games.

End your game. Leave your Xbox 360 on long enough for it to upload your saved game. When you play the game again, you'll pick up where you left off.

To confirm that your saved game has synced with the cloud, follow these steps:

  1. On your Xbox 360 console, go to Settings and select System.
  2. Select Storage, and then select Cloud Saved Games.
  3. Select your game.
    • If it says "In sync", it's available to play on Xbox One.
    • If your game hasn't synced, start the game, save your progress and exit again.

Some games (mostly arcade games) will save your game progress to your profile instead of creating a save file. Even though there's no file, your game progress will also transfer over when you change consoles.

Make sure that you save your game frequently while playing on the Xbox One. If you open another full-screen app or game without saving, you'll lose your unsaved progress.

How do I switch from playing a game on Xbox One to playing it on Xbox 360?

When you're playing on Xbox One, Xbox 360 game saves are uploaded only after you quit the game. You must quit the game from Home or launch another non-backward compatible game in order for your console to upload the save. If you turn off your console, it will be uploaded when you turn it back on.

Will I need to re-earn my Xbox 360 game achievements on Xbox One?

No. If you earned an achievement on Xbox 360, you'll still have it when you play on Xbox One.

How do I remove the Xbox 360 games and profiles that have been saved on my Xbox One console?

You can remove all Xbox 360 games and profiles that have been saved to your console by following these steps:

  1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.

Note Double-tapping the Xbox button will open the guide from any other screen on the console.

  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All settings.
  4. Select System.
  5. Select Storage, and then select Clear local Xbox 360 storage.
  6. Select Yes. Your console will restart. (This will not affect your cloud-saved games or Xbox One games and profiles.)

Can I use my Xbox 360 controllers or accessories with Xbox One (or vice versa)?
