There is less space available on your Zune player or Windows Phone 7 than expected

Overview

When you use the Zune software on your computer to check the total storage space on your Zune player or Windows Phone 7, you find there is less space available than you expected.

When you rest the mouse pointer over the dark gray part of the bar that shows Reserved space and other content, more space is being used here than you expected.

Note The Reserved space and other content section represents downloaded apps and games, and content that was downloaded from other computers and copied onto the player or phone. All other media content, such as music, videos, and pictures, are portioned out on the storage space bar by type. Here's an example that displays music:

Note The space that you have available will vary from the examples shown here. Also, the Zune and Window Phone space bars may vary slightly in appearance.

This issue may occur for any of these reasons:

  • You changed the sync relationship between your computer and your Zune player or Windows Phone 7.
  • You changed the sync relationship on a computer other than your own. In addition, whatever media is already on your device isn't detected or managed by the Zune software.
  • You connected your Zune player or Windows Phone 7 to another computer, and you tried to sync content from the software to your device as a guest.
  • You switched the device sync option from All to Items I choose.
  • There is more reserved space allocated to your device than you want.
  • You have too many apps or games installed on your player or phone.
