Xbox One Kinect won't turn on

Overview

If you’re having trouble with your Xbox One Kinect sensor, start by verifying that the sensor is turned on. You’ll know that the sensor is on if the Xbox logo on the front of the sensor is bright.

If the Xbox logo on the front of the sensor is not lit or it is lit but your console is telling you the sensor is disconnected, follow the troubleshooting steps on this page.

Note If your Xbox One Kinect is does turn on without any errors, but you’re having trouble with your sensor, see Troubleshooting Kinect overview.

Solutions

Your Kinect sensor is unplugged

If your Kinect sensor is not detected by the Xbox One console, a “Kinect not detected” icon is displayed in the upper-right section of the Xbox One dashboard. This icon shows an image of the sensor with a line through it.

If you see this icon on the dashboard, try these solutions:

  • Make sure the connector on the end of the Kinect cable is plugged in firmly into the Kinect port on the back of the console.
  • If the connector is firmly connected, unplug it, wait 10 seconds and then plug it in again.
  • If you’re still having trouble, restart your Xbox One console.

Your Kinect sensor is turned off in the Settings menu

Your Kinect sensor may be turned off in the Settings menu. To verify that your sensor is turned on in Settings, press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings, then select Kinect. Verify that Kinect on is selected.

Your console is not plugged in or not turned on

Verify that the Power Supply Unit (PSU) for your console is plugged in. When the PSU is plugged in, the LED on the console is white or orange. If your PSU is plugged in and the LED is not bright, see Getting to know your Xbox One power supply.

Your Kinect sensor needs to be updated

If you have not connected to Xbox Live recently, your console may need to be updated. To update your console, connect to Xbox Live by using a wired or wireless connection.

When your Xbox One console is connected to Xbox Live, any available updates will be automatically installed. After the updates are installed, test your Kinect sensor again and try these steps again if necessary.

Run Kinect setup again

If you’re still having trouble, try to running Kinect setup again. To run Kinect setup, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Menu button on your controller.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select Kinect.
