Microsoft offers gift cards and prepaid codes for a variety of services. This page covers the types of prepaid codes and gift cards you can use to purchase Xbox-related content, the kinds of content the codes can purchase, and how each type of prepaid code affects your Microsoft account.

Xbox gift card

What can I purchase with an Xbox gift card?

Xbox gift cards are a great way to get the latest games and entertainment from the Xbox Store. Once you redeem your Xbox gift card to your Microsoft account, use it to buy the latest games, map packs, movies, TV, music, apps, and more from any participating Microsoft online store, including the Windows and Windows Phone stores.

Notes

  • You can’t use the Xbox gift card to purchase an Xbox Live Gold subscription or other subscription services directly.
  • You can’t use the Xbox gift card to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace or Xbox 360 content on the Xbox One.
  • When you purchase an Xbox gift card, make sure that the currency you use matches the currency associated with the recipient’s billing account. Otherwise, the recipient will be unable to redeem the gift card.
  • If you redeem an Xbox gift card in a country that doesn’t match the country associated with your billing account, you won’t be able to use those funds.
  • The funds in your Microsoft account can’t be transferred after you redeem your Xbox gift card.
  • You can’t use funds in your Microsoft account to purchase physical goods from online stores.

Windows gift card

What can I purchase with a Windows gift card?

Windows gift cards work the same way as Xbox gift cards and are a great way to get the latest games, apps, and entertainment from the Windows Store. Once you redeem your Windows gift card to your Microsoft account, use it to purchase content from any participating Microsoft online store, including the Windows Phone and Xbox stores.

  • You can’t use the Windows gift card to purchase an Xbox Live Gold subscription or other subscription service directly.
  • You can’t use the Windows gift card to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace, or Xbox 360 content on the Xbox One.

Xbox Live Gold subscription prepaid code

What can I purchase with an Xbox Live Gold subscription prepaid code?

An Xbox Live Gold subscription prepaid code can be used to purchase either a 1-, 3-, or 12- month Xbox Live Gold subscription to use on your Xbox console. You can’t purchase anything else with this type of prepaid code.

Other prepaid codes

What can I purchase with other types of prepaid codes?

Besides Xbox gift cards, Windows gift cards, and Xbox Live Gold subscription prepaid codes, there are other types of prepaid codes for specific items.

Examples include the EA Access Pass for Xbox One Download Code, game-specific prepaid download codes, downloadable content codes for specific games, and the Groove Music Pass Digital Code.

These prepaid codes can only be used to purchase the intended Xbox subscription or content. You can’t purchase anything else with this type of prepaid code.

Microsoft Points

In August 2013, Microsoft Points were retired. Transactions on the Xbox now take place using your local currency.* Microsoft Points cards you purchase from retailers will continue to be redeemable on your console and Xbox.com until further notice. Microsoft has no plans to discontinue acceptance of previously purchased Points cards and codes. For more information, see Microsoft account transition to local currency FAQ.
