I received a message to upgrade my OS to play Quantum Break. Which version of Windows do I need?

You need to be running Windows 10 with the November update (version 1511 or higher) applied to be able to download and install Quantum Break.

Additionally, your device must be running a 64-bit version of Windows 10. If you have a 32-bit version, you will not be able to play Quantum Break.

To see which version you’re running on your device:

  1. Go to Start, enter About your PC, and then select About your PC.
  2. Look under PC for Edition to find out which version and edition of Windows your PC is running.
  3. Look under PC for System type to see if you're running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows.

If you don’t see a version listed, you need to update before you’ll be able to download the game. There are a couple of ways you can do this:

  • Go to Start, select Settings, select Update & security, and then select Windows Update. Check to see if there are any updates available.
  • Visit the Windows 10 November update: FAQ  page to upgrade your device to Windows 10 with the November update.

Note If it’s been less than 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, you won’t get the November update right away. This is to allow you to go back to your previous version of Windows if you choose. After the 31 days have passed, your PC will automatically download the November update.

Do I need additional software to play the game?

Yes, you’ll need to have DirectX 12 or higher installed to be able to play Quantum Break.

To see if you have DirectX 12 installed:

  1. Press the Windows logo key + R to launch the Run command.
  2. Type “dxdiag” and then press Enter to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  3. On the System tab in the System Information window, look for the DirectX version listed. This must be 12 or higher to be able to play Quantum Break.

Note If your device doesn’t have DirectX 12, you’ll still be able to purchase and redeem a code for the game. However, you won’t be able to launch it.

What are the hardware requirements?

What happens if I download the game on a device with lower than minimum device specifications?

We recommend that you check your device specifications first to ensure they meet the minimum requirements.

If you’ve already purchased the game, you can try adjusting the in-game graphics options by doing the following:

  1. While playing Quantum Break, go to Menu, and then Display.
  2. Select Graphics Preset and choose Low.

If the game runs with this setting, you can try increasing the Graphic Preset level. You can also create custom options, which allow you to customize various display settings.

If you’re running your device with an AMD graphics card, visit the AMD support site and make sure that you’re running the latest version of the driver for your card.

If you have dual graphics cards, or if your GPU supports G-Sync or FreeSync modes, Quantum Break will not support these at launch. We are working on it – continue to check back at http://www.quantumbreak.com/windows10 for future updates.

If this doesn’t resolve your problem and the game still won’t run correctly on your device, you can request a refund within 5 days of purchase if you purchased the game at the Windows Store (this does not apply to the free download redeemed as part of the Quantum Break pre-order campaign). For more information, see the Microsoft Store - Returns page.

How big is the game?

Quantum Break requires a minimum of 68 GB of free hard drive space to download. This may increase depending on how much additional downloadable content you purchase.

To determine how much available disk space your device has:

  1. Go to Settings, select System, and then select Storage.
  2. The used disk space for each drive on your device will be displayed. Check to ensure you have at least 68 GB of available space.

If you have more than one drive or partition, make a note of the one with the most available space. Under the Save locations section, make sure that New apps will save to: is set to that drive or partition.

Note If you’ve already started downloading the game, cancel and restart the installation to allow the game to be saved to the new location.

If you’ve already installed Quantum Break and you want to change the location from one drive to another:

  1. If you’re already playing Quantum Break, make sure it’s closed.
  2. Go to Settings, select System, and then select Storage.
  3. Select the drive to which you installed the game, and then select Apps and games.
  4. Select Quantum Break, select Move, and then choose the partition to which you want to move the game.

How long will it take to download the game?

The download time can vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection. On average, to download 68 GB over a 20 Mbps connection takes around 7 hours.

While you’re downloading the game, do not cancel the download or shut down your computer. The Quantum Break icon will appear on your Home screen once the download is complete.

Note Additional Internet fees may apply in some countries.

If you’re experiencing a slow download of the game, you can try the following solutions:

  1. Make sure that you’re not downloading more than one game, app, or update at a time.
  2. If you have any other devices on your network that may be using bandwidth (for example, streaming a movie), you should pause this until your download has completed.
  3. Check for any Windows 10 updates available for your device. Go to Settings, and then select Update & security to see if there are any updates pending.
  4. Troubleshoot potential connectivity issues by visiting the Fix network connection issues page.

What kind of accessory device do I need to control the game?

You can use a mouse and keyboard, or an Xbox One controller. If you use a controller, you’ll need either a USB cable to connect it to your device, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

Do I need an account on Xbox Live to play the game?

You’ll need a Microsoft account on Xbox Live to play Quantum Break. If you already play games on Xbox 360 or Xbox One, you can use the same account.

If you don’t have an account on Xbox Live, you can use the same Microsoft account you used to purchase the game. Further details can be found on the Microsoft account FAQ page.

Do I need to be online or connected to the Internet to play?

If you’re planning to be in an area with no online coverage, such as a long-distance flight or a sailing excursion, you can prepare your Windows 10 device to allow you to play Quantum Break offline.

For details on how to configure your Windows 10 device for offline play, visit Play games offline on Windows 10 using Offline mode.

The following in-game modes require an online connection:

  • Viewing the live action show

If you play offline, some features, such as the ability to purchase additional items from the Windows Store, will not be available. Additionally, any leaderboards will be unavailable while you're offline.

If you earn any achievements while playing offline, they will sync to your account the next time you sign in to Xbox Live on your device. Your game save progress will also sync when you sign in to Xbox Live.

You also won't be able to use the benefits of Xbox Live while offline. See Why should I sign in to Xbox Live with a Microsoft account? below for details.

I’m stuck while trying to play. How do I continue?

Quantum Break has in-game help that you can access at any time. This will help you get moving again if you’re stuck. You can also press up on the D-pad  to display a reminder of what the current mission objective is.

Visit the Quantum Break community site to engage with other players, as well as keep up to date with the latest news on the game.

I already have the Xbox One version of Quantum Break. Are the two versions of the game linked?

Quantum Break on Xbox One and Windows 10 are the same version of the game. This means that you’ll earn achievements on both, and that they’ll carry over between platforms. Game saves will also work cross-platform, meaning that you can start playing on Xbox One and continue playing on Windows 10, and vice versa. You’ll need to be signed in to the same Microsoft account on both Xbox One and Windows 10 for this to work.

If you do change platforms, there may be a delay of a few minutes while the saved progress of your game synchronizes. For more information and troubleshooting steps, see Cross play on Windows 10 and Xbox One.

How many times can I download and install the game?

You can download and install Quantum Break on up to 10 different Windows 10 devices using the same Microsoft account.

Why should I sign in to Xbox Live with a Microsoft account?

When you connect Quantum Break to the Xbox Live service, you get the following benefits while you play on your Windows 10 device.

Note You must connect to Xbox Live through the Xbox app to launch Quantum Break. See Do I need to be online or connected to the Internet to play?

  • Stay connected to the Xbox Live community, view achievements, watch game clips, and more.
