Error code 205 occurs when you’re trying to add an Xbox 360 console to Windows Media Center

Overview

You may see the following error code and message when you try to add an Xbox 360 console to Windows Media Center:

Windows Media Center Extender setup failed with the following error code: -205.

This may mean that Windows Extender can’t set up a user account for your console. This may happen because your computer is joined to a domain that has a Group Policy setting that prevents the console from connecting to the computer. Or, this may happen because the Media Center Extender certificate is corrupted.

Solutions

To resolve this problem, try the following solutions:

Solution 1: Clear Extender connection data from your console and computer and then try adding the Xbox 360 console to Windows Media Center again

  • On your Windows Vista or Windows 7-based computer, uninstall Windows Extender. Here's how:
    1. On your computer, start Windows Media Center.
    2. Click Tasks and then click Settings.
    3. Click Extender and then select your Xbox 360 console.
    4. Click Uninstall.
  • On your Xbox 360 console, disconnect from your computer's Windows Media Center. Here's how:
    1. In the System Settings section of the Xbox Dashboard, select Computers.
    2. Select Windows Media Center, and then press the A button.
    3. Select Disconnect.
    4. Press the B button repeatedly until you return to the System Settings section.
    5. If the Xbox 360 console has a hard drive or a memory card, move to the System Settings section, and then select Memory.
    6. Select Hard Drive or Memory Card, select Games, and then select your profile.
    7. Select Xbox 360 Dashboard and then select Windows Media Center.
    8. Select Delete, and then press the A button.
    9. Press the B button repeatedly until you return to the System Settings section.

Now, try adding the Xbox 360 console to Windows Media Center on your computer again.

If you see the error code again, try the next solution.

Solution 2 (for Windows Vista-based computers): Remove the Media Extender Certificate

  1. Click Start (or the Windows icon in the lower-left corner), type mmc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you're prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
  2. Click Certificates, and then click Add.
  3. Select Computer account, and then click Next.
  4. Select Local computer, and then click Finish, and then click OK.
  5. In the Navigation Pane under Console Root, expand Certificates, expand Personal, and then click Certificates.
  6. Right-click Microsoft Windows Media Center Extender Host, and then click Delete.
  7. After you remove the certificate, uninstall the Extender, and then restart the Extender setup.

If you see the error code again, try the next solution.

Solution 3 (for Windows Vista-based computers): Restart the Network List Service

  1. Click Start (or the Windows icon in the lower-left corner), type services.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password or click Continue.

  1. In the list of services, verify that Started appears under Status and that Automatic appears under Startup Type for Network List Service.
  2. If you have to change the settings for the service, double-click the service, make the change and then click OK.
  3. Restart Extender setup.
