Solutions

Try the following solutions to resolve the problem.

Solution 1: Try installing the update again

Here's how:

  1. Restart your console.
  2. Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller (the large centre “X” button).
  3. Go to Settings and select System Settings.
  4. Select Network Settings.
  5. Select Wired Network or your wireless network name (if you're prompted to do so).
  6. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
  7. Select Yes if you're prompted to update your console software.

If the problem is not resolved, try the next solution.

Solution 2: Make sure you have enough storage space

The latest console software update requires at least 190 megabytes (MB) of storage space (or 256 MB if you live in Japan). If you don't have enough free space, you need to move or delete some items. See Copy, move or delete Xbox saved games, profiles and avatar items.

If the problem is not resolved, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Clear the system cache

Removing the temporary files on your console might resolve the problem. To do this, see How to clear the cache on Xbox 360.

After clearing the cache, try the update again. If the problem is not resolved, try the next solution.

Solution 4: Reinsert the storage device

  • If you’re using an Xbox 360 Memory Unit or a USB flash drive instead of a hard drive, remove and reinsert the memory unit or USB flash drive.
  • If you have a hard drive, try removing and adding the hard drive again.

After you have replaced the storage device, try the update again. If the problem is not resolved, try the next solution.

Solution 5: Copy the update to a USB flash drive or disc and install it from there

Here's how:

  • Copy to a USB flash drive
  • Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.

    1. Plug your USB flash drive in to a USB port on your computer.
    2. Download the update file.
    3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
    4. Double-click the file to unzip it.
    5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.
    6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
    7. Plug the USB flash drive in to a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
    8. Restart the console.
    9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you're prompted to update the console software.
  • Burn to CD or DVD
  • You can also download the update on your computer, burn the update to a CD or DVD, and then install the update on your console. Here’s how:

    1. On your computer, download the update file.
    2. Click Save to save the console update .zip file on your computer.
    3. Double-click the file to unzip it.
    4. Insert a blank, writeable CD or DVD into your computer.
    5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your CD or DVD, and select to write (burn) the files to the disc.
    6. Remove the disc from your computer and insert it into the disc drive on your Xbox 360 console.
    7. Restart the console.
    8. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you're prompted to update the console software.

Solution 6: Request a repair

If the previous solutions didn't resolve the problem, your console needs to be repaired. See Getting your Xbox console or Kinect sensor serviced.
