Problem

You may see the following error code and message when you try to download an update:

  • Update Failed
  • Can't process the update. If the problem persists, go to www.xbox.com/support.
  • Error Code xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-C800-8001
  • Note The “x” digits vary.

This means that the download failed and the update was not installed.

Solutions

To resolve this problem, try the following solutions:

  • Download the update again
    1. Restart your console.
    2. Press the Guide button on your controller.
    3. Go to settings and then System Settings.
    4. Select Network Settings.
    5. Select Wired Network or your wireless network name (if you're prompted to do so).
    6. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
    7. Select Yes if you are prompted to update your console software.

If you still experience the problem, try the next solution.

  • Check your Xbox Live connection

If you're having problems connecting or staying connected to Xbox Live, see Xbox Live: Connect to Xbox Live.

If you still experience the problem, try the next solution.

  • Make sure you have enough storage space

The latest console software update requires at least 190 megabytes (MB) of storage space (or 256 MB if you live in Japan). If you don’t have enough free space, you need to move or delete some items. See Copy, move or delete Xbox saved games, profiles and avatar items.

If you still experience the problem, try the next solution.

  • Clear the system cache

Removing the temporary files on your console might solve the problem. Clear your Xbox 360 system cache and then try downloading the update again.

If you still experience the problem, try the next solution.

  • Reinsert the storage device
    • If you’re using an Xbox 360 Memory Unit or a USB flash drive instead of a hard drive, remove and reinsert the Memory Unit or USB flash drive.
    • If you have a hard drive, try removing and adding the hard drive again.

After you replace the storage device, try downloading the update again.

If you still experience the problem, try the next solution.

  • Apply the update from a USB flash drive or disc

If none of the preceding solutions fixed the problem, copy the console update from your computer to a USB flash drive, CD or DVD. Then, install the update on your console. Here's how:

    • Copy to a USB flash drive

Note The USB flash drive must use the FAT32 file system.

      1. Plug your USB flash drive into a USB port on your computer.
      2. Download the update file.
      3. Click Save to save the console update .zip file to your computer.
      4. Double-click to unzip the file.
      5. Copy the contents of the .zip file to the root directory of your USB flash drive.
      6. Unplug the USB flash drive from your computer.
      7. Plug the USB flash drive into a USB port on your Xbox 360 console.
      8. Restart the console.
      9. When the console restarts, the installation program starts automatically. Select Yes when you are prompted to update the new console software.

    • Burn to CD or DVD

You can also download the update to your computer, burn the update to a CD or DVD, and then install the update on your console. Here’s how:
