Update wirelessly

An Xbox One Wireless Controller purchased in or after June 2015 can take updates wirelessly without connecting via USB cable. This controller has a small, circular 3.5-mm port on the bottom of the controller; controllers without this port must update via USB cable.

An arrow emphasises the 3.5-mm port on the Xbox One Wireless Controller.

Follow these steps to update your controller wirelessly and to support the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adaptor:

  1. Sign in to Xbox Live on your Xbox One console and install the latest system update if prompted to do so.
  2. If you have a Stereo Headset Adaptor, plug it in to the bottom of your controller so it can also get updates.
  3. If you're using a Stereo Headset Adaptor, plug in a headset (a headset must be plugged in so the adaptor will turn on).
  4. Press the Menu button .
  5. Select Settings.
  6. Select Devices & accessories.
  7. Select the controller that you want to update.
  8. Select Update, and then select Continue.
  9. When the update has been completed, you can update additional controllers. If they can only be updated via USB, see Update via USB. Otherwise, select the Update another button on the screen after the first update is complete, and then follow the steps.
The 'Controller updated' screen is displayed, with a check mark indicating a successful update. The 'Update another' option is highlighted.

Notes

  • The auto-detect feature of this update may not work immediately if you plugged your Stereo Headset Adaptor into the controller while downloading a system update, or while the console was turned off. To resolve this, go to the Home screen and unplug the adaptor. Then, re-plug the adaptor into the controller.
  • You only need to update your controller one time to use the Stereo Headset Adaptor. However, if you plan to use the Stereo Headset Adaptor with other Xbox One controllers, you’ll need to follow this process for each controller. Additionally, check for new updates periodically as Xbox frequently delivers new controller features and improvements.
  • If you try to update a controller that was already updated, the system will check the controller and proceed to the success screen within a few seconds to indicate that it’s already updated.

Update via USB

Follow these steps to update your controller via USB and to support the Xbox One Stereo Headset Adaptor:

  1. Sign in to Xbox Live on your Xbox One console and install the latest system update if prompted to do so.
  2. If you have one, plug the Stereo Headset Adaptor into the bottom of your controller so it can also get updates.
  3. If you're using a Stereo Headset Adaptor, plug in a headset (a headset must be plugged in so the adaptor will turn on).
  4. Plug the big end of the included USB cable into the port on the left side of the console, around the corner from the disc tray.
  5. Plug the small end of the USB cable into the top of the controller.
The 'Let's get ready' screen is displayed. An arrow emphasises connecting a USB cable to the controller. The 'Continue' button is highlighted.
  1. Instructions to install the update should automatically appear. Follow the instructions, and don’t disconnect the USB cable while the update is in progress. (The process can take up to 3 minutes.)
  2. If instructions to install the update don’t automatically appear, you can start the process manually. To do this, press the Menu button , select Settings, select Devices & Accessories, select the controller that you’re updating, select Update and then select Continue.

  3. When the update is complete, unplug the USB cable. If you have additional controllers to update, connect them now, one at a time, select the Update another button on the screen and then follow the steps.
The 'Controller updated' screen is displayed, with a check mark indicating a successful update. The 'Update another' option is highlighted.
  1. Press the Xbox button on the wireless controller to turn it on. Your controller is now up-to-date, and you’re ready to use your Xbox One Stereo Headset Adaptor.

Notes

  • The auto-detect feature of this update may not work immediately if you plugged your Stereo Headset Adaptor into the controller while downloading a system update, or while the console was turned off. To resolve this, go to the Home screen and unplug the adaptor. Then, re-plug the adaptor into the controller.

  • If you try to update a controller that was already updated, the system will check the controller and proceed to the success screen within a few seconds to indicate that it’s already updated.
  • If you have more than one controller connected via USB cable, the update will tell you to disconnect the other controller and update just one controller at a time.

Update via PC

You can update your controller on a Windows 10 PC via the Xbox Accessories app. This app and feature is not available on previous versions of Windows.

Follow these steps:

  1. Get the app from the Windows 10 Store by searching for "Xbox Accessories".
  2. Connect your Xbox One Controller via a USB cable or the Xbox Wireless Adaptor for Windows. For details, see All about the Xbox Wireless Adaptor for Windows.
  3. When the controller is connected, you'll see a message that tells you either an update is mandatory or you can go to More Options to get the update.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to update.

Note Controllers that do not have the 3.5-mm audio port built in (controllers produced prior to June 2015) will need two things to support the update:

  • Your Windows 10 operating system needs the TH2 update from 12 November 2015, for updates to work with older controllers.
  • You must connect your controller by using a USB cable. You can't update by using the Xbox Wireless Adaptor for Windows.
