Troubleshoot problems changing your online safety or privacy settings on Xbox One

You want to change your privacy and online safety settings, but you’re unable to make the changes.

Solutions

Solution 1: Make sure that you’re signed in to the console and in to Xbox Live. You must be online and signed in to make changes.

Solution 2: Make sure that you’re signed in using an adult account. Children and teens are restricted from making changes to their own privacy and online safety settings.

Solution 3: If you receive an error message when you try to change your privacy settings, search for the error using the Error Code Lookup Tool.

Solution 4: Have you set your Sign-in, security & passkey settings to require a passkey to change settings? If you’ve forgotten your passkey, you can remove the current passkey. After three failed attempts to enter your passkey, you’ll be prompted for your Microsoft account password. Enter your password, and you can then remove the forgotten passkey.

If you want to create a new passkey, select create a new passkey and follow the instructions.

If you don’t add a new passkey, you’ll be prompted to enter your password if your Sign-in, security & passkey settings are still set to require a passkey for settings changes. You’ll have to change this setting to stop getting prompted.
