Understand and manage storage on Xbox One

Xbox One keeps all your data up to date by synchronising with Xbox LIVE. You no longer need to make a decision about whether to save something locally or in the cloud – your data is stored in both places automatically. Saved games, app data and your preferences are immediately available when you sign in to any Xbox One console.

How much storage do I have?

The Xbox One is equipped with a 500-gigabyte (GB) internal hard drive. Most of this space is available for storing games and apps, though some is reserved for saved games, console software and other important system functions.

What’s stored on my hard drive, and what’s stored in the cloud?

Your data is stored to both your hard drive and the cloud simultaneously. Xbox Live keeps your important data in sync so you don’t lose anything when you use a friend or family member’s console, or even when you switch to a new console.

Note A regular connection to Xbox Live is required to keep your data in sync. Playing offline may cause your cloud data to become out of date. Your data refreshes each time you connect to Xbox Live.

How can I check my free space?

You can check the free space on your console by looking in My games & apps.

  1. From the Home screen, select My games & apps.
  2. On the left side of the screen, a meter shows the percentage of storage space used and your total free space.

    Note The Xbox One uses some storage for system files, so even with no games installed, you’ll not see the full 500 GB free.

How do I set up external storage?

When you connect a compatible external storage drive, Xbox One will prompt you to format the drive and walk you through setting it up to store games and apps.

The basic requirements for storing games and apps on an external drive are:

  • Has capacity of 256 GB or more
  • Uses USB 3.0.

Devices that don’t meet these requirements will be treated as media storage, such as for music or video. If you have a storage device that does meet these requirements for game and app storage, you can cancel the format to use it as a media device.

If you cancel the format when you connect the storage device, you can still set it up as a storage device later. Here's how:

  1. Press the Menu button, select Settings, select System, then select Manage storage.
  2. Select your storage device, then select Format for games & apps.

How do I play media from an external drive?

To play media from the external drive, install Media Player app. When you run the Media Player app, select your external USB drive, then select the media that you want to play.

How do I manage external storage?

In My games & apps, you can view content by storage device. To do this, highlight a game or app, press the Menu button on your controller, and then select Manage game. You will then be able to move or copy content between storage devices.
