Use an Xbox One console as a guest

When you have a guest who wants to participate in side-by-side multiplayer games but does not have their own Xbox Live account or gamertag, they can create a guest account on your Xbox One console for one-time use.

When using a guest account, a temporary account is created as a copy of the account of the family member who is currently signed in to the console.

At the end of the session, when the family member whose account was used to create the guest account signs out, the guest account is also signed out and removed from the console.

How to create a guest account on Xbox One

  1. Scroll left on the Home screen to open the guide.
  2. Select Sign in.
  3. Scroll down and select your account to sign in.
A list of accounts is displayed on the sign-in panel displayed over the Home screen.
  1. Select Add & manage.
  2. Select Add guest.
The gamerpic for the signed-in account is displayed along with options for 'Add new' and 'Add guest,' which is highlighted.
  1. If you're going to be using the Kinect for Xbox One, follow the instructions to enable the Kinect sensor to recognize your guest. If not, you can choose to skip the Kinect steps.

The guest account is a copy of the host account and appears as Host Name (1).

The gamerics of signed-in players are displayed, with one selected, along with options for 'Sign out' and 'I wasn't recognized.'

If you have multiple guests who want to participate, you just need to select Add guest again to make more guest accounts.

How to remove a guest account from your Xbox One console

When you or your guest signs out, the guest account is removed. Here's how to sign out of your console:

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller to return to the Home screen.

Frequently asked questions

What privacy and online safety settings are applied to a guest account?

If there is only one person signed in to the console, the guest account has the same privacy settings as that host.

If there are multiple household members signed in, the guest account has the same privacy and online safety settings as the family member with the most restrictive settings. For example, if a child is signed in, the guest is restricted by the child's settings.

Can a guest make purchases using the host account's payment instrument?

No, the host's payment and subscriptions are not added to the guest account. No purchases can be made with a guest account.

Can I save this guest account to use in the future?

As soon as either the host or the guest signs out, the guest account is removed from the console. If your guest anticipates playing on this console in the future, we recommend that they create a Microsoft account and gamertag on the console.
