A Windows app doesn’t work with your Kinect for Windows v2 sensor

You may find that your Kinect for Windows v2 sensor won’t communicate with a Windows application because of bandwidth limitations when other devices are connected to the same USB hub.

Solutions

The Kinect for Windows sensor v2 needs a significant portion of the USB3 bandwidth in a USB controller. If other devices are connected to your computer via USB ports (keyboard, mouse or other peripherals), they are also using that bandwidth and the sensor may not be able to function correctly.

Try the following to fix the USB bandwidth problem:

  • Disconnect the sensor, disconnect any unused USB devices and then reconnect the sensor.
  • Use a different USB3 port on the computer. If you are using a USB3 hub, unplug the sensor from the hub and plug it directly into a USB3 port on the computer.

More information

Bandwidth refers to the capacity of a device to transfer or receive data. Every computer has a set amount of bandwidth available to run its own systems as well as those of the devices connected to it.

To keep both your computer and your Kinect for Windows sensor working smoothly, try not to have other devices connected to your computer’s USB ports when you use your Kinect for Windows v2 sensor.
