Troubleshoot Xbox LIVE profile password errors

Overview

You can restrict access to your Xbox LIVE profile on any console, by requiring your Microsoft account password to sign into your profile. For information about how to add or change your profile password option, please see Password protect your Xbox LIVE profile.

Note “Microsoft account” is the new name for what used to be called “Windows Live ID”. It’s the email address and password you use to sign in to Microsoft services (including Xbox LIVE). Your Xbox console may still refer to your Microsoft account as your “Windows Live ID”. Keep in mind that these two terms mean the same thing. Your Xbox LIVE sign-in information has not changed. Error: Problem requiring your password for sign-in

If you get one of the following errors when you try to require a password for sign-in, try the solutions below.

  • "Sorry, there was a problem requiring your password for sign-in on other consoles. Your password is still remembered for other consoles. Try again later, or try requiring password on sign-in from www.xbox.com. Visit xbox.com/security if you think someone else is accessing your account."
  • "Sorry, there was a problem requiring your password for sign-in on this console. Your password is still remembered on this console. Try again later, or try requiring password on sign-in from www.xbox.com. Visit xbox.com/security if you think someone else is accessing your account."

Solution 1: Require a password to sign in using Xbox.com

Use the following steps to remove your Microsoft account password so that your Xbox LIVE profile can’t be accessed without your Microsoft account password. Here's how:

Xbox.com: Remotely require a profile password

  1. Go to My Account.
  2. Under Settings & Preferences, click Xbox 360 Profile Protection.
  3. Sign in with the Microsoft account (email and password) that is associated with your Xbox LIVE account.

If you have forgotten your Microsoft account password, see Find your Microsoft account or password.

  4. The number of consoles where a sign-in password is not required is displayed.
  5. Select Protect Profile to require that your profile be redownloaded from Xbox LIVE, using your Microsoft account and password, before it can be used on a console. All existing copies of your profile will no longer work and any profile changes or achievements not saved to Xbox LIVE will be lost.

Important If you believe your password has been compromised, you should also change your Microsoft account password. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the accounts.live.com and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Under Account information, click Change next to Password.

If you can’t require a password using Xbox.com, try solutions 2 and 3 below.

Solution 2: Check the Xbox LIVE service status

Check the Xbox LIVE service status. If the Xbox LIVE service is up and running, try the next solution.

Solution 3: Sign into your profile later

Wait and try to require a password later.
