How to edit the metadata in your Zune music or video collection

Note As of 15 November 2015, the Zune service has been discontinued. This may cause errors when attempting to stream or download content or update the service. For more information, see the Zune retirement FAQ.

“Metadata” is used to categorise audio and video files in your collection. If items in your collection are not tagged correctly, you can edit the metadata by using the Zune Music + Video software.

Using the Zune software

  • Edit a file's metadata: Right-click, swipe or tap and hold an audio or video, and then click or tap Edit. A window will open with information that you can edit, such as Song Title, Album Artist, Genre and more.
  • Find album info: Right-click, swipe or tap and hold an album, and then select Find album info. A window will open where you can search online for album and artist information. Follow the steps, and then select Finish to update the information in your collection.
  • Update album art: Right-click, swipe or tap and hold an album, and then select Update album art. A window will open where you can browse for an image from your computer to use as album cover art.
  • Drag content: You can also drag one piece of content onto another to update information about the selected files automatically. Depending on which collection view you are using and the content that you have selected, you can update the file metadata in the following ways:

Drag content in Artists Collection view:

    • Dragging ARTIST onto artist updates the source artist title to the destination artist title.
    • Dragging ALBUM onto artist updates the source album artist name to the destination artist name.
    • Dragging SONG onto artist updates the song artist to the destination album artist.

Drag content in Genre Collection view:

    • Dragging ALBUM onto genre updates the album genre but leaves the track genre intact.
    • Dragging SONG onto genre updates the song genre only.
    • Dragging GENRE onto genre updates all songs and albums that have the source genre to the target genre.
