New accounts

When you set up an Xbox One or Xbox 360 console and create a new account, you can access Xbox Live Free membership features, assuming that you have a broadband Internet connection. At the end of the account creation process, you can upgrade to an Xbox Live Gold membership. If you don’t upgrade, you can receive a free Xbox Live Gold trial membership.

The Xbox Live Gold trial membership is associated with a single gamertag and can’t be added to an existing membership. A total of three trial accounts are available per console, and this limitation cannot be reset. After a user has created three trial accounts, the user no longer receives a message that provides the opportunity to create an Xbox Live Gold trial account.

To use the Xbox Live Gold trial membership, you must add a payment method to your account.

Important At the end of the free trial period, membership automatically renews to a paid membership that renews monthly by default. The membership will renew to the payment method that was added to your account. If you don’t want the membership to renew, you must turn off automatic renewal. For more information, see Cancel your Xbox Live Gold (paid) membership.

Xbox Live Gold One Month Free trial memberships

If you already have an Xbox Live account and don’t have an active Xbox Live Gold membership, you may be able to sign up for an Xbox Live Gold One-Month Free trial membership. This membership is a one-month membership that will renew monthly after the first (free) month. These memberships are available only for customers who don’t currently have an active membership, and this kind of membership can’t be added to an existing membership. You must provide a valid payment method in order to purchase.

Important At the end of the first (free) month, membership automatically renews to a paid membership that renews monthly by default. The membership will renew to the payment method that was added to your account. If you don’t want the membership to renew, you must turn off automatic renewal.

Pre-paid codes for Xbox Live Gold trial memberships

Some games or console bundles may include a prepaid code or token for an Xbox Live Gold trial membership. The Xbox Live Gold trial membership starts as soon as you activate the pre-paid card or token.

The following limitations and restrictions apply to Xbox Live trial tokens:

  • If you have an existing Xbox Live Gold membership, you can’t redeem a trial token to extend the membership period. You can redeem the code once your current subscription expires.
  • Trial tokens are only available in certain games and bundles.
  • You can’t stack trial cards. You can’t start another trial period before your current trial period has finished. However, you can purchase a new Xbox Live Gold membership and start the membership at any time during the trial period.
  • Any free account member can use an unlimited number of trial tokens to receive separate Xbox Live Gold trial memberships. Because you cannot stack tokens, you must wait until your current trial period has finished before you start another trial period.
