You see a "Download Stopped" error message on Xbox 360

You see the following error message when you try to download Xbox Live content on your Xbox 360 console:

Download Stopped

You may see this error message if:

  • You need to install a system update.
  • Your network bandwidth is low.
  • You started another activity on your console. Content downloading has a lower priority than gameplay or other activities.

Solutions

Solution 1: Check for available system updates

Solution 2: Check your connection to Xbox Live

To test your connection to Xbox Live, run the Xbox Live Connection Test. Here's how:

  1. Press the Guide button  on your controller.
  2. Select settings, select System, and then Network Settings.
  3. Select the name of your Wireless Network, or select Wired Network for a wired connection.
  4. Select Test Xbox Live Connection.
  5. Try downloading the content again.

Solution 3: Restart the download

To fix this problem, try restarting the download. Here's how:

  1. If you’re playing a game, exit the game and go the Xbox Dashboard.
  2. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  3. Go to Games & Apps.
  4. Select Active Downloads.
  5. Select the item you want to download, and then select Download Now.

If the download is not in the Active Downloads list, you’ll need to start the download again. Here's how:

  1. On your console, sign in to Xbox Live.
  2. Go to settings, and then select Account.
  3. Select Download History.
  4. Select the item you’re having trouble downloading, and then select Download Again.

Important While the download is in progress, do not use your console to do anything else, such as play a game. Using the console while downloading content can cause the download to pause, stop or time out. Also make sure that other computers in your home are not downloading or transferring files. When someone in your house browses the Internet, they use bandwidth that could be going to your console.
