How to change your Xbox Live payment option and transfer your balance

If you’ve received notification that a charge has been declined, you can add a new payment option to your account and then transfer your current outstanding balance to the new payment option. Here’s how.

Step 1: Add a new payment option to your account

You can add a payment option by going to My Account on the Xbox website, or you can add a payment option to your account using your Xbox console. For step-by-step instructions, see Add a payment option to your Xbox Live account.

Step 2: Transfer your outstanding balance to the new payment option

Next, transfer your outstanding balance from your old payment option to the new payment option you added in step 1. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Microsoft account page and sign in.
  2. On the Billing Account Overview page, under Your payment methods, click the credit card that has an existing balance.
  3. On the Payment Method Activity page, click Go to payment method information.
  4. On the Payment Method Information page, under Payment method information for this account, click Use a different payment method.
  5. On the Transfer All Services page, under Use a different payment method, select the credit card that you want to transfer the balance to and then click Next.
  6. On the Confirm Transfer page, confirm the balances and services that you want to transfer and then click Complete transfer.
    Note The old credit card will be removed from our system after this transfer and you can no longer use the removed credit card. Any information about it that still appears is for historical reference only.
