Read answers to commonly asked questions about Gears of War: Ultimate Edition on Windows 10.

Frequently asked questions

I was prompted to upgrade my operating system to play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. Which version of Windows do I need?

You need Windows 10 with the November update (version 1511 or later) to download and install Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

Additionally, your device must be running a 64-bit version of Windows 10. If you have a 32-bit version, you will not be able to play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

To see whether you're running an appropriate version of Windows on your device:

  1. Go to Start, type "About your PC" and then select About your PC.
  2. Look under PC for Edition to find out which version and edition of Windows your PC is running.
  3. Look under PC for System type to see if you're running a 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows.

If you don't see a version listed, you need to update before you can download the game. There are a couple of ways you can do this:

  • Go to Start, select Settings, select Update & security, and then select Windows Update. Check to see if any relevant updates are available.
Note If it's been less than 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, you won't get the November update right away. This is to allow you to go back to your previous version of Windows if you choose. After the 31 days have passed, your PC will automatically download the November update.
  • See the Windows 10 November update: FAQ page to upgrade your device to Windows 10 with the November update.

Do I need additional software to play the game?

Yes, you need to have DirectX 11 or later installed to play Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

To see if you have DirectX 11 installed:

  1. Press the Windows logo key+R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type "dxdiag" and then press Enter to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  3. On the System tab in the System Information window, look for the DirectX version listed. It must be "11" or higher to run Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.

What happens if I download the game on a device that doesn't meet the hardware requirements?

We recommend that you check the device specifications first to make sure your device meets the minimum requirements.

If you've already purchased the game, you can try adjusting the in-game graphics options:

  1. Go to Settings on the Gears of War: Ultimate Edition main menu.
  2. Select Video and then select Screen Resolution.
  3. Set the screen resolution to a low setting. Lower settings may work better.
  4. Set "Default Settings Options" to Lowest.

If this doesn't allow the game to run correctly on your device, you can request a refund within five days of purchase. For more information, see the Microsoft Store - Returns page.

While you're downloading the game, do not cancel the download or shut down your computer. The Gears of War: Ultimate Edition icon will appear on your Home screen once the download is complete.

Note You may be subject to additional Internet fees while you download the game.

If you're experiencing a slow download of the game, try the following:

  1. Make sure that you're not downloading more than one game, app, or update at a time.
  2. If you have any other devices on your network that might be using bandwidth (for example, streaming a movie), you should pause them until your download has completed.

  4. Troubleshoot potential connectivity issues by visiting the Fix Network Connection issues page.
