Download, move, or delete your Xbox Live profile

Overview

If you have more than one Xbox 360 console or you want to play games at a friend’s house, you might want to download your Xbox Live profile to multiple consoles.

Download your Xbox Live profile

You might want to download your Xbox Live gamer profile in the following situations:

  • You want to use your Xbox Live gamertag on another console.
  • You have a Zune, Games for Windows, or Windows 8 Microsoft account (download your existing account instead of creating a new account).
  • You accidentally deleted your Xbox Live gamertag from your console.

You can download your Xbox Live gamertag to any console. Here’s how:

  1. Press the Xbox Guide button on your controller (large X button in the center of your controller).
  2. Select Download Profile.
  3. Note Not seeing Download Profile? Press X to sign out of your profile.

  4. Enter the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox Live gamertag. If you don’t know your Microsoft account or password, see Find your Microsoft account or password.

Note “Microsoft account” is the new name for what used to be called “Windows Live ID.” It’s the email address and password you use to sign in to Microsoft services (including Xbox Live). Find out more.

  5. Now, enter your Microsoft account password.

Note If your account is an Xbox Live child account, the parent’s Microsoft account information is required to download the profile.

  6. Select the storage device for your profile (for example, Hard Drive).
  7. Your profile will begin downloading. Once your profile is downloaded, you can choose whether or not you want to require your Microsoft account password to sign into your profile.

Remember Password option

The Remember Password option is off by default, which means you’ll be prompted for your Microsoft account password when you sign into your Xbox Live profile.

  1. Leave the Remember Password unchecked (off), if you want to be prompted for your Microsoft account password when you sign into your profile on this console.
  2. Note If you’re downloading your profile to your own console, you can select the Remember Password option so that you aren’t prompted for your Microsoft account password when you sign into your profile.

You can now sign in using your Xbox Live gamertag on this console.

Important If you downloaded your profile to another console and you chose the Remember Password option, you can remotely remove the password so that your profile can’t be accessed on the other console. To learn how to do this, see Password protect your Xbox Live profile.

Move your profile to another console

If you don’t want to download your profile to another console using the above steps, you can move your profile to another console using a USB flash drive or Xbox 360 Memory Unit. Here’s how:

  1. Plug a USB flash drive or an Xbox 360 Memory Unit (original Xbox 360 console only) into your console.
  2. Go to Settings, and then select Storage.
  3. Select All Devices.
  4. Select Gamer Profiles, and then select your gamer profile.
  5. Select Move.
  6. Select the USB Storage Device or Memory Unit that you want to move your profile to.
  7. Remove the USB flash drive or memory unit from your console, and take it to another console.

When you use the profile for the first time on a console, you will be prompted to enter your Microsoft account password to sign in.

Important When you move your profile to another console, you’ll be prompted for your Microsoft account password. This password requirement is to protect the security of your account if your storage device is lost or stolen. For information on how to protect your profile, see Password protect your Xbox Live profile.

When you’re done playing on your friend’s console, take the USB flash drive or memory unit back home and plug it into your console. If you want to move your profile back to your hard drive, go back to Settings, Storage.

Delete a gamer profile

You can delete profiles that you no longer use from your console. Here’s how:

  1. Go to Settings, and then select System.
  2. Select Storage.
  3. Select All Devices.
  4. Select Gamer Profiles.
  5. Select the gamertag that you want to delete.
  6. Select Delete.
  7. Select one of the following:
    • Select Delete Profile Only. This deletes the profile but leaves saved games and achievements.
    • Select Delete Profile and Items to delete the profile and the associated saved games and achievements.
