Error: Can't perform the requested action due to a temporary server error.

Overview

If you see the error message “Can't perform the requested action due to a temporary server error. Please try again later”, it means that your device doesn’t have a wireless network connection or it can’t connect to the Internet.

What to try

Make sure that you have a connection to the Internet

To check your network connection:

  1. From the Start screen, start to type “control panel”, and then tap or click the Control Panel graphic.
  2. From Control Panel, tap or click Network and Internet, and then tap or click Connect to a network. This screen will show your connection status.

If you don’t have a network connection, here’s how to find one:

  1. From the Start screen, start to type “control panel”, and then tap or click the Control Panel graphic.
  2. From the Control Panel screen, tap or click Network and Internet and then tap or click Connect to a network.
  3. You’ll see a list of available networks appear on your screen. Click the one that you want, enter a password if necessary and then check whether you have Internet access.

If you still can’t connect, check your router and your password

  • Make sure that your router is turned on.
  • Restart the router. To do this, disconnect the power cord from the router, wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord back in.
  • Check that your router is working correctly. To do this, you need to bypass your router and plug your computer directly into an Internet outlet (for example, your modem). Next, go to the Xbox LIVE website on your computer, and see whether you have Internet connection. If you can connect without using the router, then your router may not be working correctly.
  • Make sure that you have the correct password for the account. Re-enter the network password, network key or passphrase.

If you still can’t connect, check your router’s configuration

  • Make sure that the router SSID is set to broadcast mode.
  • If the wireless router is configured to accept only clients using media access control (MAC) addresses, you must add the MAC address of the player to the list of clients on the router.
  • Make sure that the access point or the router to which you connect is a DHCP server. (And make sure that the DHCP is turned on.)
  • Try to reserve an IP address for your device on the router.
  • If you use a WEP-encrypted network, check whether it is running in "WEP Shared" mode or in "WEP Open" mode. Make sure that the mode listed on the router matches the mode that the device is configured to use.
  • If the router has a "Turbo G" mode, a "G-only" mode or a "B-only" mode, try to run the router in "mixed" mode. "Mixed" mode combines all modes in which the router can run.
  • If the router has a "QoS" setting, make sure that it's turned off.
  • If you are running a network with WPA TKIP+AES or with WPA2 TKIP+AES, try to use only WPA TKIP, WPA AES or WPA2 AES.

Check for updates, and update your computer

After you connect to Wi-Fi or the Internet again, check for any high-priority updates by going to Microsoft Update Center. The Windows Update screen will give you an update status and prompt you through any important updates. After you successfully update, try again. If your computer is already up to date or an update doesn’t resolve this problem, try the steps in this article.
