Stream media using Xbox Music, Xbox Video, or Windows Media Player

Overview

You can stream music, pictures and video to your Xbox 360 console from your computer by using Windows Media Player, Xbox Music or Xbox Video.

Note If you want to use Windows Media Centre to stream content from your computer to your console, see Using Windows Media Centre with Xbox 360.

Note Xbox One does not support streaming media from Windows Media Centre.

Step 1: Connect your console to your network (if you have not connected already)

If you have already connected your console to your network, you can go to step 2 below.

If not, connect your console to your home network using a wired or wireless connection. Then, test to make sure that your Xbox console connects successfully. Here's how:

  1. On your Xbox controller, press the Guide button.
  2. Go to Settings, then select System Settings.
  3. Select Network Settings.
  4. Select Wired Network or Wireless network.
  5. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection.

If the network status for the connection to your network shows as Connected, go to step 2 below. Otherwise, select More Info on your console and follow the suggestions.

Step 2: Set up Windows Media Player

Get Windows Media Player.

Which version do you want to use?

  • Windows Media Player 12 (Windows 7)
    1. In Windows Media Player, select Turn on media streaming from the Stream menu.
    2. 2. On the page that appears, click Turn on media streaming.
    3. Name your media library and click OK.

  • Windows Media Player 11 (Windows Vista)
    1. In Windows Media Player, right-click Library and then click Media Sharing.
    2. Click Share my media and then OK.
    3. In Sharing Settings, locate the Xbox 360 device.
    4. Click Xbox 360, click Allow and then click OK.
    5. If you want to apply more options, click Settings.
    6. When you've finished, click OK.

Step 3: Play or view music or videos

Play music

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to music and select Xbox Music.
  3. Select the playlist of songs that you want to play.

Play videos

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller.
  2. Go to film & tv and select Xbox Video.
  3. Select the video that you want to play.
