Use Kinect voice commands to turn your Xbox One on or off

Overview

One of the new features of Xbox One is the ability to turn your console on or off by using voice commands. It’s easy! Once you’re set up, you’ll just say “Xbox on” or “Xbox, turn off”.

And it gets better. You can also configure your Xbox One console to turn other entertainment devices on or off. For example, you can control your TV, audio/video receiver and cable/satellite receiver. After you configure your Xbox One console, your entire entertainment system can turn on instantly and be ready to play the next time you are.

Solutions

Prerequisites

There are a few things to know before you use the “Xbox on” and “Xbox, turn off” commands:

  • The “Xbox on” command is currently available in the following languages:

Languages supported by “Xbox on”

Command

English

“Xbox On”

French

“Xbox Démarrez”

German

“Xbox An”

Note The “Xbox, turn off” command is available in all countries where voice commands are supported. For a list of countries and available voice commands, visit Xbox One Kinect voice commands.

  • Your Kinect sensor must be plugged into your Xbox One console. Your sensor must also be enabled in the Settings menu. To verify that your sensor is enabled, press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings, then select Kinect.

Verify that the Kinect on setting is selected. If Kinect on is not selected, click Kinect on.

  • The “Wake up Xbox by saying ‘Xbox on’” setting must be selected in Power & startup.

Note This setting is enabled by default.

  • To use the “Xbox on” command, your Xbox One console must be in Instant-On power mode. If your console is in energy-saving mode, the console and sensor are turned off and not listening for voice commands. For more information about power modes, visit About energy-saving and Instant-On power modes and How to change the power settings on your Xbox One console.
  • To control other devices such as your TV or audio/video receiver, these devices must be set up on your console. To set up these devices, press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings and then select TV & Cable.

Turn your Xbox One console on or off by voice

Note Make sure that you complete the steps in the “Prerequisites” section before you try to use voice commands.

When your Xbox One is in Instant-On power mode, the console is listening for voice commands. When your console hears someone say “Xbox on”, the console will turn on. Additionally, the console will turn on any devices that you have set up on the TV & Cable page.

Note When you use voice commands, speak clearly and don’t use any extra terms. For example, just say “Xbox on” instead of “Xbox, please turn on”.

When you’re finished playing, just say “Xbox, turn off”. Your console and any devices that you configured on the TV & Cable page will be turned off. If there are other people in the room, your console will try to interpret if the current player is the one who is trying to turn off the console.

Troubleshoot issues with voice commands

If you’re having trouble turning your console on or off using voice commands, try these solutions:

  • Make sure that you’ve met all of the requirements listed in the “Prerequisites” section above.
  • Check that your power supply is firmly plugged into the wall outlet and into your Xbox One console. Then make sure that the LED power indicator light on the front on the console is orange or white. If the LED is not lit, see Troubleshoot your Xbox One power supply.
  • Make sure that your Kinect sensor is plugged into your console and that the sensor turns on when your console is on. If it doesn’t turn on, unplug it for about ten seconds and then plug it back in. If you’re still having trouble, see Your Kinect sensor won’t turn on.
  • Restart your Xbox One console. If you unplugged your Kinect sensor or experienced a power outage, the sensor may not be listening for voice commands.
  • If your Kinect sensor doesn’t recognise some or all of your voice commands, try the following:

Note If your play space is noisy, or if another player in focus uses a different language, Kinect may not recognise your voice commands.

  • If you’re having trouble controlling other devices such as your TV or satellite/cable box, make sure that these devices are set up on your console. To verify, press the Menu button on your controller, select Settings and then select TV & cable.
