Rise of the Tomb Raider on Windows 10 FAQ

Find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about Rise of the Tomb Raider on Windows 10.

Frequently asked questions

I received a message to upgrade my OS to play Rise of the Tomb Raider. Which version of Windows do I need?

You need to be running Windows 10 with the November update (version 1511 or higher) applied to be able to download Rise of the Tomb Raider.

To see whether you’re running this version on your device:

  1. Go to Start, enter About your PC, and then select About your PC.
  2. Look under PC for Edition to find out which version and edition of Windows your PC is running.
  3. Look under PC for System type to see if you're running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows.

If you don’t see a version listed, you need to update before you’ll be able to download the game. There are a couple of ways you can do this:

  1. Go to Start, select Settings, select Update & security, and then select Windows Update. Check to see if there are any updates available.
  2. Visit the Windows 10 November update: FAQ page to upgrade your device to Windows 10 with the November update.

Note If it’s been less than 31 days since you upgraded to Windows 10, you won’t get the November update right away. This is to allow you to go back to your previous version of Windows if you choose. After the 31 days have passed, your PC will automatically download the November update.

Do I need additional software to play the game?

Yes, you’ll need to have DirectX 11 or higher installed to be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider.

To see if you have DirectX 11 installed:

  1. Press the Windows logo key +R to launch the Run command.
  2. Type “dxdiag” and then press Enter to launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  3. On the System tab in the System Information window, look for the DirectX version listed. This must be 11 or higher to be able to play Rise of the Tomb Raider.

What happens if I download the game on a device with lower than minimum device specifications?

We recommend that you check your device specifications first to ensure they meet the minimum requirements.

If you’ve already purchased the game, you can try adjusting the in-game graphics options by doing the following:

  1. While playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, go to Options.
  2. Select Display and Options, and then select Graphics.
  3. Select Preset, and then adjust the graphic settings to Lowest. This setting can be raised to a higher quality if your device supports it.

If this doesn’t resolve your problem and the game still won’t run correctly on your device, you can request a refund within 5 days of purchase. To do this, visit Accounts & Billing on the Microsoft support page.

How big is the game?

Rise of the Tomb Raider requires a minimum of 35 GB of free hard drive space to download. This may increase depending on how much additional downloadable content is purchased.

To determine how much available disk space your device has:

  1. Go to Settings, select System, and then select Storage.
  2. The used disk space for each drive on your device will be displayed. Check to ensure you have at least 35 GB of available space.

How long will it take to download the game?

The download time can vary depending on the speed of your Internet connection. On average, to download 35 GB over a 20 Mbps connection takes around 3.5 hours.

While you’re downloading the game, do not cancel the download or shut down your computer. The Rise of the Tomb Raider icon will appear on your Home screen once the download is complete.

Note Additional Internet fees may apply in some countries.

If you’re experiencing a slow download of the game, you can try the following solutions:

  1. Make sure that you’re not downloading more than one game, app, or update at a time.
  2. If you have any other devices on your network that may be using bandwidth (for example, streaming a movie), you should pause this until your download has completed.
  3. Check for any Windows 10 updates available for your device. Go to Settings, and then select Update & security to see if there are any updates pending.
  4. Troubleshoot potential connectivity issues by visiting the Fix Network Connection issues page.

What can I use to play the game?

You can use a mouse and keyboard, or an Xbox One controller. If you use a controller, you’ll need either a USB cable to connect it to your device, or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.

Do I need to have an account on Xbox Live to play the game?

You’ll need a Microsoft account on Xbox Live to play Rise of the Tomb Raider. If you already play games on Xbox 360 or Xbox One, you can use the same account.

If you don’t have an account on Xbox Live, you can use the same Microsoft account you used to purchase the game. Further details can be found on the Microsoft account FAQ page.

Do I need to be online or connected to the Internet to play?

You can play the game offline; however, some features, such as purchasing additional items from the Store, will not be available until you go online. Additionally, any leaderboards will be unavailable while you’re offline.

You also won’t be able to use the benefits of Xbox Live while offline. See the What are the differences between the Windows 10 and Steam versions of the game? section below for a list of Xbox Live benefits.

I already have the Xbox One version of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Are the two versions of the game linked?

The Xbox One and Windows 10 versions of Rise of the Tomb Raider are different versions. Therefore, there’s no link or crossover between the games.

As you’ll need to have an account on Xbox Live to play, you can earn achievements and gamerscore in both games. However, any progress you make on the Xbox One version will not carry over to the Windows 10 version, and vice versa.

How many times can I download and install the game?

You can install Rise of the Tomb Raider on up to ten different Windows 10 devices using the same Microsoft account.

What are the differences between the Windows 10 and Steam versions of the game?

Both the Windows 10 and Steam versions of Rise of the Tomb Raider will be the same price at launch, and they’ll also have the same downloadable content. This is referred to as In-App Purchase or IAP in the Windows Store.

However, the Windows 10 version of the game will connect to Xbox Live, which gives you the following benefits. You can:

  • Stay connected to the Xbox Live community, view achievements, watch game clips, and more.
  • Easily record, narrate, and share your most epic gaming moments with built-in Game DVR.
  • Store your saved games in the cloud and continue playing on a different PC right from where you left off.
  • Play with your Xbox Wireless Controller on Windows 10 using the Xbox Wireless Adapter.

To launch Game DVR while playing, press Windows logo key + G.

To manage your Game DVR settings, launch the Xbox app, go to Settings, and then Game DVR.

Any game clips that you capture while playing Rise of the Tomb Raider can be accessed via the Xbox app. See Benefits of running the Xbox app while playing a game on Windows 10 for more information.
