Troubleshoot update issues with your Xbox One Controller

If you encounter an error when you try to update your Xbox One Controller, this may indicate a problem with the update or that something may not be connected properly.

Xbox One Controller is not properly connected

Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable, headset, and stereo headset adapter.

If you're trying to update the controller wirelessly, try connecting a USB cable and follow the Update via USB steps in Update your Xbox One Controller.

Error: There was a problem updating your controller

If you still see this error message, try the following:

  1. Disconnect the stereo headset adapter from the controller and apply the update. If it was successful, attach the stereo headset adapter and attempt the update again.
  2. If this doesn’t work, try these steps:
    1. Do a full power cycle of your console by holding down the Xbox button on your console for approximately 10 seconds.
    2. Turn your console back on by pressing the Xbox button on the console or the Xbox button on your controller.
Note If you don’t see the green boot-up animation when the console restarts, repeat these steps. Make sure you hold the power button until the console completely shuts down.
  3. If you still can’t update the controller, try a different USB cable, and make sure it’s firmly connected to the console’s USB port and the controller’s USB port.
  4. Leave the controller connected via USB and just let it sit for up to 5 minutes, as the update can sometimes take a while to complete in the background.

If you successfully updated your controller and are experiencing issues, try the following steps:

  1. Reconnect your USB cable, and make sure it’s firmly connected to the console’s USB port and the controller’s USB port. To recover the controller, wait about a minute for the controller to properly sync with the console.
  2. Re-run the controller update.

As of the April 2014 Xbox One System Update, the firmware for the controller and the stereo headset adapter has been updated and includes significant improvements to audio quality with the stereo headset adapter, and to the process of updating controllers. If you’ve taken the update previously and are having issues with your adapter, please update your controller again by going to Settings, selecting System, selecting Devices & Accessories, selecting your controller, selecting Update, and then pressing Continue.
