“The Software Licensing Service reported that the license file is not installed” Xbox Video error

Overview

When you try to play a video in the Xbox Video app on Windows 8, you get the error message “The Software Licensing Service reported that the license file is not installed” (also represented as error code 0xC004F011). This error message means that the video you are trying to play was encoded in a format that’s not supported by the Xbox Video app. The file can only be played using Windows Media Center, which has to be installed to play the file.

What to try

Not all versions of Windows include Windows Media Center. For information about how to install Windows Media Center, see Get started with Windows Media Center.
