“Can't play because the item's usage rights are corrupt” error when streaming Music

You might get the following error message when you try to listen to streaming content through your Xbox Music subscription:

Can't play.
Can't play because the item's usage rights are corrupt or no longer valid. Try deleting this item and downloading it again.

If you see this error message, either your computer that has been upgraded to Windows 8 can't play content that's protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM), or your Xbox Music Pass (formerly Zune Music Pass) subscription can no longer play Xbox Music subscription content. To fix this problem, you'll have to delete the Xbox Music subscription content from its current location and then download the Xbox Music app again or re-download the content you were trying to listen to.

What to try

If the Music app won't play Xbox Music subscription content, try deleting the content from its current location and then downloading the Music app. Here's how:

  1. Using portable media such as a flash drive or CD-ROM, move the Xbox Music subscription content on your computer to another location.
  2. Delete from your computer the content that you stored to another location in step 1.
  3. In the Win 8 app, click Music.
  4. Select My Music.
  5. Right-click the following icon and select Download:

This will enable you to download an mp3 version of the file.

• You won't be charged for downloading this content.
• This version of the file, which you can download free of charge, is not DRM-protected.

If your Xbox Music pass subscription can't play Xbox Music subscription content, try deleting the content from its current location and then downloading it to your Xbox 360 console again. Here's how:

  1. Using portable media such as a flash drive or CD-ROM, copy the content from your Xbox 360 hard drive and save it in another location.
  2. Delete the content from your Xbox 360 hard drive.
  3. On Xbox LIVE, at Browse Apps, choose the Music app.
  4. At Xbox Music, find and download the content that you tried earlier to download.
    Note You won't be charged for downloading this content.

Typically, this error occurs for one of the following reasons:

  • The computer that's been upgraded to Windows 8 can no longer play the Xbox Music subscription content that you've purchased.
  • Your Xbox Music Pass (formerly Zune Music Pass) subscription can no longer play Xbox Music subscription content
