Folders monitored by default with Xbox 360 as Windows Media Extender

Overview

When you use your Xbox 360 console as a Windows Media Center Extender, some folders on your computer are monitored automatically. This article lists the folders that are monitored by default.

When you set up a Windows Media Center Extender, the Windows Media Center Extender software scans the folders on the computer and adds all audio, video, and picture files to the appropriate sections of Windows Media Center based on file type.

After you set up your Xbox 360 console as a Windows Media Center Extender, content in the monitored folders is reflected in Windows Media Center on your Xbox 360 console.

  • If you add content to the monitored folders on your computer, the new content is automatically reflected in the Windows Media Center library on your Xbox 360 console.
  • If you stop monitoring a folder on your computer, that content is not removed from the Windows Media Center library on your Xbox 360 console. To delete content in folders that were previously monitored, you must clear the existing Windows Media Center connection data and then run Windows Media Center Extender Setup again. For more information, see How to clear Extender connection data from your Xbox 360 and Media Center computer.
  • After you set up your Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender, you can use Library Setup on the Windows Media Center Extender to add content from other computers that are running Windows Media Center or from network shares.
  • The Windows Media Center Extender account must have the following permissions to access the content that is stored on computers that are running Windows Media Center or stored on network shares:
    • Read
    • Read & Execute
    • List Folder Contents

    Notes

    • You may have to set these permissions manually.
    • Typically, the Windows Media Center Extender account name begins with "MCX." For example, a Windows Media Center Extender account name is "MCX1" or "MCX2".
