Troubleshoot the connection between Windows Media Center and your Xbox 360

Learn to troubleshoot the most common errors that you might experience when using Windows Media Center with your Xbox 360.

Errors

Xbox 360 Setup is Finished. The correct ports cannot be opened

Explanation: This error occurs if Windows Firewall is turned off on the computer. Windows Firewall must be turned on for Windows Media Center Extender setup to complete. Once you’ve set up the Media Center Extender, you can turn the firewall off again if you choose.

Solution: To resolve this error, try the following solution.

Turn on Windows Firewall

  1. On your computer, click Start, type services.msc in the Search programs and files box, and then press Enter.
  2. In the list of services, double-click Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
  3. On the General tab, click Start under Service status.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Run Windows Media Center Extender Setup again.

To turn Windows Firewall off

If you didn’t use Windows Firewall previously and you want to turn it off again, follow the steps below.

Note Make sure that you wait until after you set up Windows Media Center Extender.

  1. On the computer, click Start, type firewall.cpl in the Search programs and files box, and then press Enter.
  2. On the left pane, click Turn Windows Firewall on or off, and then click OK.

Your console can’t connect your PC with Windows Media Center. Make sure your PC is on and connected to the network.

Explanation: This error might occur if you install McAfee Privacy Service after you set up a Windows Media Center extender on a Media Center-based computer. This service prevents you from establishing a connection between the Media Center extender and the Media Center-based computer.

Solution: Remove the McAfee Privacy Service.

  1. Remove McAfee Privacy Service.
  2. Run Windows Media Center Extender Setup again.

Xbox 360 not found

Explanation:

  • If McAfee Privacy Service is installed on your computer, you might get this error when you run Windows Media Center Extender Setup. The McAfee Privacy Service is not compatible with the Media Center extender software.
  • This error might also be caused by a connection or firewall issue.

Solutions

  • Remove the McAfee Privacy Service

    1. Remove the McAfee Privacy Service.
    2. Run Windows Media Center Extender Setup again.

  • Confirm that your console and PC are connected to the same network

    If you’re getting this error, your Xbox 360 console and your Windows Media Center PC might not be connected to the same network.
