Find your Microsoft account

Your Windows Live ID is your Microsoft account. Your Xbox console may still refer to your Microsoft account as your “Windows Live ID”—Keep in mind that these two terms refer to the same e-mail address and password you use to sign in to Microsoft services. Find out more on this page.

Solutions

Find your Microsoft account

You can find the Microsoft account associated with your Xbox LIVE account on your Xbox console. Here’s how:

  1. Sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag.
  2. Go to Settings and select Account.

  1. Scroll right to Your Information and select Account Security. The Microsoft account (Windows Live ID) that is associated with your Xbox LIVE account is shown.

If you can’t sign in to an Xbox LIVE profile on your console, here are some other ways to find your Microsoft account:

  • Go to accounts.live.com and try signing in with what you think is your Microsoft account (email address and password). If you can sign in to Windows Live, the email address and password you entered are valid. Next, go to Xbox.com and try signing in with this same information. If you’re prompted to create a new gamertag, the Microsoft account you entered is not currently associated with an Xbox LIVE account.
  • Check your email accounts for messages about your Xbox LIVE Membership (search for messages about “Xbox LIVE” or “Microsoft billing”). This may help you determine which email address is associated with your Xbox LIVE membership (an email address is part of your Microsoft account information).
  • If you know your Microsoft account but can’t remember your password, see Recover your Microsoft account password .

Find your parent Microsoft account

If your Xbox LIVE account is under parental control and you want to identify the parent Microsoft account, follow these steps on your console:

  1. Sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag.
  2. Go to Settings and select Online Safety.
  3. Select an item to change and select Save.
  4. You are then prompted for your parent’s permission to make the change. The parent Microsoft account is displayed on the password entry screen.

Notes

  • If you are not prompted for parental permission when you make the change, your profile is not under parental control.
  • If the age set in your Xbox LIVE account is at or above legal adult age for your country or region (for example, 18 in the United States), you can remove your account from parental control. For more information, see "Promote a child account to an adult account" in Xbox LIVE online safety and privacy.

Find your child’s Microsoft account

If you want to find a child’s Microsoft account that is associated with your Xbox LIVE account, you can use your console to find that information.

If the child’s gamertag is saved on your Xbox console, sign in under the child’s gamertag and then follow the steps under Find your Microsoft account, above.

If the child’s gamertag is not saved on the Xbox console, follow these steps:

  1. Sign out of all profiles.
  2. Press the Guide button and select Download Profile.
  3. Enter the Microsoft account email address and password for your (parental) account.
  4. Select the child’s account to download.
  5. Leave the Remember Password box checked and select Sign in.

You can now find the child’s Microsoft account by signing in under the child’s gamertag and following the steps under Find your Microsoft account.

Forgot your Microsoft account password?

If you've forgotten your Microsoft account password or if you want to reset it, see Recover your Microsoft account password.

Did you recently sign up for Two-Step Verification?

If you recently turned on two-step verification, you may not know how to sign in to apps or devices that don't accept security codes. Some apps (like the mail apps on some smartphones) or devices (like the Xbox 360, for example) can't prompt you to enter a security code when you try to sign in. If you get an incorrect password error with an app or device, you'll need to create a unique app password to sign in. Once you've signed in with your app password, you're all set to use that app or device. You will use this new app password to sign in to your device going forward instead of your Microsoft account password.

You'll need to create and sign in with an app password once for each app or device that can't prompt you for a security code.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account.
  2. Under Password and security info, tap or click Edit security info.
If you're prompted for a security code here, enter it and tap or click Submit.
  3. Under App passwords, tap or click Create a new app password.
A new app password is generated and appears on your screen.
  4. On your Xbox, enter the app password displayed on the screen when asked for your Microsoft account password.
