Add or change an Xbox LIVE payment option

Overview

There are several scenarios in which you may need to update the payment instrument associated with your Xbox LIVE or Xbox Music Pass subscription:

  • You are getting a notice that your subscription payment is being declined.
  • Your subscription has been suspended due to a problem with your payment instrument.
  • The expiration date on your payment instrument has changed.
  • You have a new payment instrument that you need to use. (You may have lost the previous one, or you may have been issued a replacement from your bank.)

It’s important that you follow the steps below to ensure that the payment instrument you want to use for your Xbox LIVE or Xbox Music Pass subscription is applied to the subscription. Adding a payment instrument to your Xbox LIVE account will not apply it to your membership or unsuspend your subscription.

Use the following steps to change the payment option associated with your Xbox LIVE membership.

Xbox.com steps

You can update the payment option associated with your subscription on Xbox.com. See below for the steps that best fit the action you need to take.

  1. Go to My Account at Xbox.com.
  2. Sign in using your Microsoft account (email and password) by clicking Sign In in the upper-right corner. Be sure and sign in with the Microsoft account that is associated with the Xbox account you need to update.
  3. Note If you don't know your Microsoft account or password, please see Find your Microsoft account.

  4. Select Manage Payment Options.
  5. Select Edit next to the payment option you want to update.

I just need to update the expiration date on the payment instrument associated with my subscription.

  1. If you just need to update the information for the payment instrument you currently have associated with your subscription, click Edit.

  1. After you have updated your information, select Save. If you do not need to make any other changes, click Done.

I need to replace the payment instrument I am currently using with a new payment instrument that I do not have on file.

  1. If you need to add a payment option and remove the current payment option, you will need to first add a new payment option, apply it to the membership, and then remove the old payment option. To do this, select Pay with PayPal or Add a new Credit Card.
  2. Note: PayPal is not available in all regions. For a list of supported regions, please see Use PayPal with your Xbox LIVE account.

  1. Once you have added the new payment option, select Save.
  2. Click Apply to Membership for the payment instrument you have just added. If you need to remove the previous payment instrument, click Remove. After you have finished updating your payment options, select Done.

I already have another payment instrument on file that I would like to use to pay for my subscription.

  • Select Apply to Membership for the payment instrument you would like to use to pay for your subscription. After you have finished updating your payment options, select Done.

Console steps

  1. Sign in using your Xbox LIVE gamertag. Make sure this is the profile that has the subscription you need to update.
  2. Go to Settings, and then select Account.

  1. Scroll right to Your Memberships, then select the membership you need to update.

  1. Select Change Payment Options.

I just need to update the expiration date on my payment instrument associated with my subscription.

  1. On the Payment Options screen, select Manage Payment Options.
  2. Select Update Payment Option, then select the payment option you want to update. After you are finished, select Next.
  3. Make sure your billing information is correct, then select Done.
  4. On the confirmation page, select OK.

If you need to add a payment option and remove the current payment option, you will need to first add a new payment option, apply it to the membership, and then remove the old payment option. To do this:

  1. Follow the steps to add either your PayPal account or a new credit card. Once you have done that, you will now see the new payment option available to apply to your subscription.
  2. Select the payment option you just added. When you see a confirmation that you have changed the payment option, select OK.

If you need to, you can now remove the previous payment option by selecting Change Payment Options, then Mange Payment Options, then Remove Payment Options. Remember that you must change the payment option for your subscription before you do this.

I already have another payment instrument on file that I would like to use to pay for my subscription.

Any payment instrument you have associated with your Xbox account will appear on the Payment Options screen.

  1. Select the payment instrument you would like to use to pay for your subscription.

If you need to, you can now remove the previous payment option by selecting Change Payment Options, then Mange Payment Options, then Remove Payment Options. Remember that you must change the payment option for your subscription before you do this.
