"System Cannot Find the Path Specified" with Games for Windows LIVE-enabled program

Overview

This article describes what to do if you see an error message that resembles the following when you try to start a program that’s enabled for Games for Windows LIVE:

System Cannot Find the Path Specified

This error can occur if you’re running a Game for Windows LIVE dedicated server that’s based on one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Vista
  • Microsoft Windows XP
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003

This error can occur for one of the following reasons:

  • A file in the %SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2 folder is damaged.
  • The Cryptographic Services service is disabled.

Reinstall the Games for Windows LIVE software

To reinstall the Games for Windows LIVE software, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the Games for Windows LIVE software. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Do one of the following:

      • In Windows 8, open the Start menu, click Search, click Control Panel, click More Settings, and then click Uninstall a program.
      • In Windows 7, click Start, type add or remove programs, and then click Add or remove programs.
    2. Click Games for Windows LIVE, and then click Uninstall/Change.
    3. Follow the directions on the screen.
  2. Reinstall the Games for Window LIVE software. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Download the Games for Windows LIVE software.
    2. Note Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

    3. Right-click the file that you downloaded in step a, click Run as administrator, and then follow the directions.
    4. After the installation is complete, close all programs and then try to start the game again.

Note For Halo 2, download the Halo 2 update package. Then, right-click the file that you downloaded and click Run as administrator. After the installation is complete, close all programs and try to start the game again.

Delete the files in the Catroot folder

To delete the files in the Catroot folder, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
  2. Locate all tmp*.cat files and delete them. If no files are found go to step 3.
  3. Click Star , point to Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    C:\Windows\System32\catroot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}
  4. Locate all kb*.cat files and delete them all. If no files are found, go to step 5.
  5. Click Start, point to Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    C:\Windows\System32\catroot\{127D0A1D-4EF2-11D1-8608-00C04FC295EE}
  6. Delete all kb*.cab files.
  7. Click Start, point to Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    C:\Windows\inf
  8. Delete all oem*.* files.
  9. Click Start, point to Run, type the following command, and then click OK:
    C:\Windows\System32
  10. Locate the cmd.exe file, right-click the file, and then select Run as administrator.
  11. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
    net stop cryptsvc
  12. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
    ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2_renamed
  13. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
    net start cryptsvc
  14. Close the command prompt window and start the game.

Download and install all Windows Updates

Install the latest updates for your computer. For more information, visit Windows Update.

Adjust the settings in Windows

To adjust the settings in Windows, follow these steps:

  1. 1. Rename the Catroot2 folder.
    Important Make sure that you do not rename the Catroot folder. Windows automatically re-creates the Catroot2 folder after you rename it. However, Windows does not re-create the Catroot folder if you rename it.
    1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    3. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
      net stop cryptsvc
    4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
      ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2_renamed
    5. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
      net start cryptsvc
  2. Set the Cryptographic Service to start automatically:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
    2. In the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in, double-click Cryptographic Services.
    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic.
    4. Click Start, and then click OK.
  3. Reinstall the program that is enabled for Games for Windows LIVE.

Note Games for Windows LIVE does not support running several different games at the same time. If you are running several different Games for Windows LIVE games, exit all games, and then restart the game that you want to play.
