Troubleshooting Video Kinect

Can't start Video Kinect chat

Your console might be having trouble connecting to Xbox LIVE. Try testing your connection:

  1. Press the Guide button on your controller, go to Settings, and then select System Settings.
  2. Select Network Settings.
  3. Select Wired Network or your wireless network name (if you are prompted to do so).
  4. Select Test Xbox LIVE Connection. If you experience a connection error, try using the Xbox LIVE Connection Solution.

Video Kinect is not smooth, or the video is not working

Video Kinect is smoothest when you have good room lighting. If the video is not smooth, try increasing your room lighting. Another possibility is that your Internet connection isn’t fast enough. Video Kinect works best if you and your friend have a high-speed Internet connection (at least 540 kilobits per second, or Kbps). For the best performance, an upload and download speed of 700 Kbps is recommended. See Improve Xbox LIVE Speed for help.

Video works, but there is no audio

If you're using a Kinect sensor to chat, make sure that you disconnect any wired or wireless headsets. Video Kinect works best if you and your friend have a high-speed Internet connection. If you are still having problems please see Troubleshooting problems with chat.

Video Kinect is blocked for this profile

Video Kinect can’t be started if a profile subject to parental controls is signed into your console (child accounts are restricted from Video Kinect by default). To change online safety settings, please see Online safety and privacy.

Xbox LIVE Gold Membership required

If your gamertag has an Xbox LIVE Gold Membership and you see this message, exit Video Kinect and try starting it again.

Can't see all of your friends

  • You will only see Xbox LIVE and Windows Live Messenger friends when they are online.
  • Do you have more than one Windows Live ID? If so, try signing in with your other account to see if your friends are associated with that account. If you want to change the Windows Live ID associated with your gamertag, please see Manage your Windows Live ID.

Can’t sign in to Windows Live Messenger

If you cannot sign in to Windows Live Messenger, make sure that port 1863 (UDP and TCP) is open on your router. Please see Network ports used by Xbox LIVE for help with opening ports.

Can’t remember your Windows Live Messenger password

If you don’t remember your Windows Live ID password, you can reset your password by going to Windows Live password reset.

Problems chatting with Windows Live Messenger friends

If the person you’re chatting with is using Windows Live Messenger, make sure they’re using the latest Messenger software. Download Windows Live Messenger .

Still having problems?

If none of the above topics fixes your problem, delete and reinstall Video Kinect. Here’s how:

  2. Select Storage.
  3. Select your storage device.
  4. Select Games.
  5. Select Video Kinect.
