You can’t update or install the Zune software on your PC, or you can’t update the Zune player software

Overview

If the Zune software on your player doesn’t update on its own, or if you’re having trouble updating the Zune Music + Video software, here are a few things to try to fix the problem.

Can’t update or install the Zune software on your PC

Here are some common error messages you might get when you try to update the Zune Music + Video software, and solutions that you can use to solve the problem.

If a required component is missing

When you try to install the Zune Music + Video software, you might receive one of the following error messages:

  • “The media for installation package couldn't be found. It might be incomplete or corrupt.”
  • “Setup must stop because the required package failed to install.”
  • “Can't contact Microsoft Update. Please try again later.”
  • “Can't download the required components from Microsoft Update. Please try again later.”
  • “Can't install the required components from Microsoft Update. Please try again later.”
  • “Path chosen is not valid’
  • “Installation failed, package Zune failed to install”
  • “No Installation Media”
  • “Can't find the media for installation package ".NET framework Runtime 2.0". It might be incomplete or corrupt.”
  • Error Code 0x80070002

When you receive any of these error messages, the Zune software will not install. These errors can happen when software components or updates are required by the Zune software for installation, but they aren't available on your computer or included in the basic download. To fix the problem, try the following solutions:

  • Make sure that your computer is running one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows 7 and Windows 8 (all editions)
    • Windows Vista (all editions)
    • Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (Home, Professional, Tablet PC, or Media Center Edition 2005 with Rollup Update 2)

      Note The Zune Music + Video software won't work on versions of Windows earlier than Windows XP SP3, any 64-bit version of Windows XP, or any version of Windows Server.

    • Mac OSX with Boot Camp running Windows 7 or Windows Vista
  • Make sure that your computer meets the following minimum system requirements:
    • 256 MB of RAM
    • Video card with 64 MB RAM (video RAM or VRAM) and DirectX 9.0b
    • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher

  • Check for updates. To do this, go to the Microsoft Update site, and then click Check for updates.
  • Reinstall the Zune software using a Microsoft Fix It solution. Verify that you have administrative rights to install software, and then run following Fix It solution.

    Click the Fix this problem link. Then, click Run in the File Download dialog box and follow the steps in this wizard.

Notes:

  • This wizard may be in English only; however, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.
  • If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD so that you can run it on the computer that has the problem.

Error: “System updates required”

When you try to install the Zune software, you might receive one of the following error messages:

System updates required

Zune software installation can't continue until you've installed one or more required updates.

Windows Update must be updated to run this program.

System updates required

Zune software installation can't continue until you've installed one or more required updates.

Version 3.1 of Windows Installer is required to run this program.

If the wizard does not work, try to install system updates from Microsoft Update.

  • Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista

    To obtain the latest updates for Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista, go to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 949104 and install Windows Update Agent.

    Note: If you are running a pre-release version of Windows 7 (build 7600 or earlier), you must update to the released version of the operating system. You can check your version of Windows here.

  • Windows XP

    To obtain the latest updates for Windows XP, go to the Microsoft Update site.

    If Windows Update is disabled, you must manually install Windows Update. To do this, go to Microsoft Knowledge Base article 949104.

Error: “Microsoft Update is required”

When you try to install the Zune software, you may receive one of following error messages:

  • Microsoft Update is required
  • Microsoft Update is required in order to check for updates. Click the link below to get more information about Microsoft Update and to add it to your system.
  • Error code: 0x80248015

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Microsoft Update site.
  2. Check for updates. Install any high-priority updates that are found.
  3. Download or reinstall the Zune Music + Video software and Zune player software.

Error: 0x80070656

When you try to install the Zune Music + Video software, you receive the following error message:

INSTALLATION FAILED

Setup must stop because the required package 'Zune' didn't install.

Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and that you can write to it.

Error Code: 0x80070656

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows 8: From the Start screen, type Run, click or tap Run under the Apps category in the right-hand menu, type C:\Program Files\Zune in the Start Search box, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

    In Windows 7 or Windows Vista: Click Start, type C:\Program Files\Zune in the Start Search box, and then press Enter on your keyboard.

    In Windows XP: Click Start, click Run, type C:\Program Files\Zune in the Start Search box, and then click OK.

    Note: "C:\Program Files" is the default location for the Zune Music + Video software. If you installed the Zune software in a different location, type that location.

  2. From the Zune window, locate and delete the ZuneReboot.bin file.
  3. Download and reinstall the Zune software.
