Can’t automatically sign in to Xbox One with Kinect after changing Microsoft account email address

This page describes what to do if you can’t sign in to your Xbox console using Kinect and are instead prompted to use a controller after you change the primary alias (email address) of your Microsoft account.

Solution

It can take up to 48 hours for changes made to your primary alias to propagate to all Microsoft services, although it’s typically much faster. Until the information is updated, you can either:

  • Use your controller to sign in manually, or
  • Remove your profile from your console and re-add it, which should clear up the problem.
To remove your profile and re-add it:
  1. Scroll left from the Home screen to the guide.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Select All Settings.
  4. Select Sign-in, security & passkey.
  5. Select Remove me from this Xbox, and then confirm by selecting Remove my account.
  6. Return to the Home screen and scroll left to the guide to sign in.
  7. Select Add new.
  8. Sign in with your new Microsoft account email address and password.
