"Sorry, we can't change your Microsoft account right now" error occurs when trying to move your gamertag

You get the following error message when you try to move your gamertag to another Microsoft account.

Sorry, we can't change your Microsoft account right now

This might mean:

  • You have a balance on your account that needs to be spent before you can make the change.
  • It's been less than 30 days since you made your last account change. You can make only one Microsoft account change for any Xbox Live gamertag every 30 days.
  • You downloaded your gamertag to a console within the last 30 days.
  • Either your original account or your target account does not meet the requirements for moving your gamertag to a new account.

Solutions

To resolve this problem, try the following solutions.

Solution 1: Use up any remaining funds in your account

This error will occur if you try to make changes to your Microsoft account while you still have a balance. You must spend any remaining funds before you can make changes to your account or before you switch your gamertag.

To view your current account balance:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com.
  2. Note your account balance under Money & gift cards.

Solution 2: Wait 30 days and try again

Try your Microsoft account change again after 30 days have passed. Once 30 days have passed since the last account change, you'll be able to update your Microsoft account.

If you aren't sure when you last made changes, view a recent activity log for your account:

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com.
  2. Select Security and Privacy.
  3. Under Account Security, select See my recent activity.

Solution 3: Make sure your Microsoft account security information is up to date

Solution 4: Review the requirements for gamertag moves

Learn what conditions must be met before you can switch your gamertag to another Microsoft account. Note that you can't merge two accounts.

If none of these solutions solved the problem, contact Xbox Support.
